Those two videos really illustrate the difference between DCT and a manual to me, an issue I've never been too opinionated about. The DCT looks so dull and uninvolving.
& will be the choice for the majority.Why buy a such a car so leaden with tech and order it with an anchronistic manual gearbox...?
It's not as if it actually makes it nicer to drive - quite the opposite in fact.... which does seem to be finally sinking in in some circles at least.

& will be the choice for the majority.I can go from luxury barge wafting along with the car making the decision to an animal where I'm in complete control. If I pull the paddle at the wrong time the car won't do what I hope it was going to do. Equally if I do, it does and lightning quick. I can't over-rev a DCT yet I can bounce off the limiter if I don't change up quickly enough.
There is no right or wrong and each to their own, personally I'm comfortable with DCT and enjoy the drive and I still feel I'm involved in the driving process.

I remember when the V8 M3 was launched, plenty of people here critisised it, heres the article;
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=412...
Even the 1M was dismissed at first by plenty of people on here;
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=23&...
Now that BMW has announced its going back to the six cylinder engine route, plenty of people are wking over the V8 again, fking hell, make your minds up.
I bet anyone any money in the world, that in 6-7 whatever years time, when the new M3/M4 comes out, people will praise this one like there's no tomorrow.
I'm 100% sure this will be a great car, and the first time I've preferred saloon over coupe, looks a bit more 'thuggish'. Though I have to say, the black one in the article does look the business
Well most of the criticism is speculation and it's all subjective. Some acclaimed movies, TV shows and bands got mixed reviews and/or weren't popular when they were first released. I think sometimes we focus on the advantages of old stuff and not the advantages of new stuff. The more changes the longer this takes.http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=412...

Back to the M3/M4 and I have no criticism of the M4 as unlike the old M3 coupe it isn't any more for the same car but slightly better looking (to me). It sounds like both are good cars other than the 'dynamic' steering.
I read that the 'active sound' system has been changed so it's no longer playing back but amplifying real intake noise in real time. I think BMW took on the criticism of the 'Active sound' system and made it more like an electronic version of the system used in the Z4.

Ref. the active noise the chief engine man explained it to me as amplification of natural intake noise/frequencies relayed through the speakers at low revs and engine load. Once the engine is up to speed it's '95 per cent exhaust noise' in his words. Strangely the fake induction noise sounded more intrusive and noticeable from the passenger seat. I'm not sure if that's because as the driver you're concentrating on other things or that the sound is actually 'louder' on that side of the car.
It is pretty loud in exhaust noise from the outside too and even the tickover is very 'angry'.
Cheers,
Dan

If you are playing the radio at the same time, or in car sounds from the CD or media then how does it sit with the speakers playing the engine noise also? Surely that takes a hit from having to do 2 jobs? Or do you have to buy the media upgrade?It is pretty loud in exhaust noise from the outside too and even the tickover is very 'angry'.

German manufacturers seem to be obsessed by gadgets and its the buying public that has provided this stupid behaviour. So we only have ourselves to blame.

As I've said previously, those who moan almost certainly haven't experienced it.
