I had slip in the automatic gearbox, especially under load. I had the oil (supplied by jaguar) and the sump/filter replaced by my local garage. The problem has not gone away. The old oil was black and smelled burnt.
Am I looking at a new gearbox, a rebuild or what?
Any idea how much any of these options might cost?
Thanks in hope

Get it into a good transmission specialist. Very hard to get the answers you are looking for on a forum.

About £2K for a quality fix, worst case scenario. As posted before, you need to take it to a specialist. Other than that, all you'll get here is suggestions ranging from an oil change to an Italian tune up. IIRC it's a ZF box on that car, very widely used.

A friend had to scrap his old XK8 due to a gearbox failure - get it to a specialist now, when it goes, its uneconomical to repair, unless you know a very good specialist who can do it on the cheap....

He was quoted £5k for parts and labour to rebuild it, car was worth less than that and would never be worth more. Junked the car, misses it to this day!

I would consider getting a gearbox from a breaker that you can see has been crashed rather than broken as that could have the same problem and installing it. Shouldn't cost more than 5 hours labour=250 quid+ what 500 for a gearbox =750
Id trust that over something someone has overhauled even with warranty as I think they are too complex and clean room needed to do properly. I think ZF in Germany have proper drive in overhaul at cheap rates.
