Hi chaps,

I've got a clunk when taking up drive and coming off power, which I can provoke at will.

The prop is off and the UJs are ok
With the handbrake on we have when looks to be a lot of crow wheel backlash, so I've taken these 2 pictures to show just how much play there is - at a rough guess this is 10-12mm
does this look excessive and can it be adjusted by me or is it a trip to a specialist?

Yes a little but nothing to immediately panic over, mines been like this for 5+ years.

As a result many years ago I bought a really good spare GKN off a reliable friend and haven’t fitted it yet as mine’s proved to be very reliable and doesn’t leak or whine. The good spare I bought has half the backlash.

If it doesn’t whine I suggest you enjoy the precious summer months especially with the Growl in two weeks and then send it to John Reid in the winter, http://www.readmanracing.co.uk/

Here's the GKN manual, on page 21 you can see the backlash is adjusted with shims so the only thing you can do in situ is check the pinon nut is tight.

Thanks Steve, I'll replace one of the prop UJs which feels a bit loose, tighten up the two drive shaft bolts I've found quite undone, and pop it all back together then.

Now there is an idea.
Nothing should need renewing in this diff though, it was refurbished only 3 years ago and that equates to less than 10k miles.

Can someone still get the spacers made?
If only I could also get the pinion and crown too because I have my old diff sitting on the shelf.
IF I ever get some time I did plan to pull the old diff apart just to have a look at how they work. If I do that I might as well replace the bearings then if anyone ever finds new crown wheels and pinions I know I can do it.

I've checked them already and they all look good.
But I only replaced them 3 years ago - Metalastic at the sides and poly for the rear one.

Henri, the bloke down the road did 5 sets for me. I kept 2 sets and flogged the others. He can make more but when I asked in the thread if anyone was interested, there wasn't much interest... Pete

Ian, as I say in the other thread, they are easy to get made but not very economical to only have a pair made. When I asked nobody was interested. Henri charges £40 per hour plus materials. I had 5 sets made for £45. I have the spec, prole is you can't get the output shaft bearings in 19mm thickness, only 17mm. Hence the 2mm spacer. Let me know what you want to do.
