I’m no HTML programmer but I’m trying to put a home page together is MS front page and I have four – sorry – yes four issues I can’t get working. I know this is being a bit cheeky trying to get free support n’all but here goes:

1. The page title does not appear in the browser. I go to file, properties… and enter a title, save and upload the page and view it but IE6 shows the URL not the title in the window top bar.

2. The URL a link points to does not show in the status bar at the bottom when you rollover it with the mouse. I have tried file, properties…, background and checked enable hyperlink rollover effects but this just highlights the link in bold when you roll over it. Not too bothered about this but it’d be a nice to have.

3. Links to pictures do not work when I use my hosted domain name. I have an image that is in the following location:

http://web.wanadoo.be/atij0010/personal/klon0603/klon1_small.JPG

But it can also be referenced via my hosted domain name:

www.aptitude-limited.com/personal/klon0603/klon1_small.JPG

Both URL’s work when pasted into IE6. However the second link does not work when used as an image location but the first one does.

4. This is the maddest one of the lot. When I upload one of the pages it’s truncated the end of the page when I view it. If I go to file, properties…, background and check enable hyperlink rollover effects and upload it again I can see the whole page! Go figure! I discovered this by accident when working point 2. I really can’t work this one out. It’s an MS special. It only happens for this one page.

Any help much appreciated folks.

Just noticed on point 2 the PH forum software has automatically removed the "http://" from the second link but not the first. Could this be a hint to why the second does not work in FP ?

Be very careful when using M$ frontpage - it does things suitable for the IIS server & IE as default.
It doesn't always generate the code as w3c defined it.

If the second site is hosted on unix for example it could be factors such as JPG is NOT jpg i.e case sensitive.
Unix will want lowercase for file extensions. Avoid spaces in filenames - it's only M$ that allow it.

Check your pages with at least Netscape 4 & 7, Opera 7, as well as IE 5.5 & 6. - you'll be suprised at the differences.

A simple example - Netscape will work with
< blink > text < /blink > but IE won't..
(no space between the brackets and blinks)

Hope this gives you some ideas - if stuck you can email me an example page that doesn't work and I'll look at it for you.

Cheers for the info. I think I have now isolated the first three of the four issues to something to do with the domain name forwarding service my host provides (I think the fourth issue must be a corrupt html file and I'll try pasting the content into a new file). If I use absolute file paths the page titles, rollover links and image URL’s all work fine. If I substitute my domain name for the absolute path in any link all three of the above stop working. I've changed all the links in my site to use absolute paths for the time being and will follow this up with my domain hosting service. I'm going to try to get this all working on IE6 before trying other browsers

Nice motor by the way. I miss my Chim over here in Brussels. The place is full of underpasses and long tunnels and I've often though how awesome that V8 would sound blasting through them .
