70s: Land Rover Series 3 Station Wagon

Why I chose it: "Every collection of cars should have an old Land Rover, in my opinion. I can't help but smile when I see one trundling (very, very slowly) along the road. I've only ever sat it one and I know they are more similar to a tractor than a car, but I love that charm. This one fell within the right era, has a nice paint job and, most importantly, seems entirely original. It's a waste to not use these cars as they were intended so I'd make sure to find some muddy slopes for it to climb up and enjoy it for the timeless British engineering marvel that it is."

80s: Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 Turbo Technics
Cost: £5,500

Why I chose it: "I was looking for a bone stock Peugeot 205 GTI for the collection here, but none were in budget. The fact this is so heavily modified may upset some purists but personally I think the idea of a lightweight hatchback with this kind of power and hardware will make a thrilling track car, especially around Knockhill."

90s: Porsche 911 (993) Carrera
Cost: £54,995

Why I chose it: "I love 911s and have grown more and more fond of the air-cooled cars over the years. In terms of driving and usability surely the 993 is the pinnacle, being fast enough but still mechanically analogue in feel and, if you so wish, every day useable. I also think they look absolutely superb, especially in dark iris blue like this one. Like the Peugeot this has been modified but I think the character of the car would be retained and just turned up to 11. This would be the weekend car, but I have a feeling I'd use it all the time just to hear that flat six start up in the morning."

2000s: BMW M5 Touring
Cost: £23,500
Balance: £3,010 (The balance would be kept for the inevitable big bills for the Beemer)
Why I chose it: "I love fast estates and I love M cars. Being able to combine them in surely what is the coolest Q-car ever seems like the ideal solution to daily transportation. I know they potentially have big bills and running one will never be cheap, but the thought of a 5.0-litre V10 powering the rear wheels of what is now, in my eyes, a great looking estate car can't be beaten. This one isn't my first choice of colour but the ad shows an owner who seems to really care about his cars and has looked after it well. After getting it, the M badges would be off and I'd be chasing down 911s on the Autobahn on a European jaunt!"
