£100K Garage: Callum Metcalfe

What more do you need in a three-car garage than a Boxster Spyder, an Evo and a Swift Sport?

Name: Callum Metcalfe
Previously owned: 2006 Vauxhall Corsa SXi, 2013 Vauxhall Corsa VXR, 2007 Renaultsport Megane R26 F1 Team
Currently owned: 2008 Vauxhall Astra VXR
On the shortlist: Lotus Exige S3 V6 350/380 Sport, Lotus Exige S2, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Golf MK5 R32

Porsche Boxster 981 Spyder
Cost
: £81,990
Balance: £18,010
Why I chose it: " I have been a massive Porsche fan since watching Clarkson review the Carrera GT on Top Gear back in 2004. I love 911s - in particular the 997.II GT3 RS. You can't touch either of these cars, even with a virtual £100K, so the next best thing is this Boxster Spyder. I saw one on the road recently and they have so much presence whilst also being a bit different to a 911. To my eyes it looks absolutely gorgeous; I'm not usually a fan of convertibles but the way the roof looks on this Boxster is very nice indeed. It has a sports exhaust to enjoy when the roof is down and those lovely bucket seats too. The GT Silver paint looks fantastic and with 3,000 miles on the clock it's basically a brand new car. This would be my weekend/special occasion car - a sunny weekend trip down to Whitby in this machine would be excellent.

Mitsubishi Evo IX FQ-360
Cost
: £14,990
Balance: £3,020
Why I chose it: "For my four-wheel drive choice I nearly picked a Mk5 Golf R32 but this Evo is much more exciting! It is a Cat D but after spending £80,000 on the Porsche I was somewhat limited in my choice and Cat D still has to be better than Cat C, right? There are plenty of Subarus at this price point but I have always been an Evo man - the IX in particular being my favourite generation. This one is a HKS Final Edition, one of 225 made according to the advert and low mileage for its age. The Steel Grey paint looks great as do the Speedline Turini wheels, the Recaro bucket seats also look very comfortable. All this outweighs the fact it's a Cat D for me. When I wanted to just go out for a drive this is what I would take in any weather and any time of the year. I would feel like a rally driver blasting down the B-roads!"

Suzuki Swift Sport
Cost
: £2,495
Balance: £525
Why I chose it: "I already have a 2008 Astra VXR. I love the car, it's in the middle of being tuned to around 300hp. I would definitely keep it and turn it into a track day car to run alongside my three car £100K fantasy garage. Therefore I want to spend my remaining balance on a FWD car to use as my daily driver which is still fun! The obvious choice would be a Clio 172/182 but after a bad experience with the Renaultsport brand that wasn't going to happen. I considered a Peugeot 108! My girlfriend has one and I actually enjoy driving it most of the time. That isn't very PH though and they are French so I chose this Swift Sport with racing stripes. It's a 2008 car with 42K on the clock for £2,495 - sounds like a bargain to me! These seem to have a reputation for being pretty reliable which is what I want out of a daily driver. The left over cash would go towards fixing the Evo or my Astra - whichever breaks first!"

A second hand Boxster for over £80k! I had no idea the latest one commanded such a price.

I've toyed with a similar list but it was with the Cayman GT4 which in my mind justifies the spending (although of course it would have been nice to buy one cheaper when it was new!).

Beyond that is was a dirt cheap FWD (Occasionally you can find an Integra that would need some serious TLC or similar to the above and probably a scoob or evo etc.. maybe a very tatty Integrale (or a Yeti apparently... cool)

I eventually decided, if I was in a position to spend this sort of money, that I would buy the Cayman, but I would need another £100K to be anywhere near satisfied with two more cars! biggrin

IMO you need a fast 4x4 estate car, a van, and a 911, for the perfect no hassle 3 car combo.

£82k on a Boxter, really?

No fast estate car required for me.
The Boxster is expensive yes but this is a fantasy 100K garage.
I do prefer 911's, of course, but the 911 I would want is more than 100K and therefore has no place in my fantasy garage.
I chose the Boxster because it looks gorgeous, is a bit different and I love the way the convertible roof looks.

Again I also love the Cayman GT4 but that's too expensive for the 100K garage game too and being honest I do think the Boxster Spyder is a little bit more special somehow.

I don't usually comment on these, but the box is a ridiculous price for a start.

And if you were really spending your own money, I doubt too many people would put that amount into a vcar, when there are loads of other cars around without issues.

What happened with your Renault sport if you don't mind me asking?

Funnily enough I'm looking to buy a Swift for The kids to learn with and pass their driving tests.

I got a load of grief for the £80k boxster too - don't take it I heart LOL

Great choices - keeping it simple.

I don't think Porsche's are anything special to look at, with the exception of the Carrera GT, and those. A tad on the expensive side though!

Nice selection, but £80k on the Boxster? Crikey. I'd have a 987 Boxster Spyder and trouser £30k - and they're on the rise at the moment it seems. As to the Swift - what a steal that is for £2.5k.

Not at all smile I didn't have any love for it was the worst thing. The interior was not a nice place to be, felt very basic and every single piece of trim had creaks and rattles. I didn't get on with the gearbox at all, couldn't help but crunch it into most of the gears, think it needed a refurb and I wasn't willing to do it on a car I didn't like. I'm getting the box refurbished on my Astra in the new year smile I might get slated for this but I just didn't like the feel of the LSD. It felt unnatural throwing the car into a corner at what you think is too much speed and it just dragging you around, made me nervous, I prefer finding the limit and the Astra is fine for that, doesn't handle as well as a Renaultsport but it's good enough for me smile it's a rare occasion I drive my car at 10/10ths.

I have never driven a swift sport but it seems you can't go far wrong and the one I posted is definitely a steal.

I don't care what people think about the Boxster, I love it, people are forgetting the fantasy part I think smile suprised I havent had more love for the gorgeous Evo!

Thank you smile I have covered all the bases I would personally want and need. I'll re do my fantasy garage to include a fast audi estate when I have kids and a dog to lug around with me smile
