BMW
Audi
– it is possible to build a small off-roader and not make it look like the back end of a dachshund. That’s the news today as Mercedes takes the wraps off its new GLA.
Small SUV in not utterly horrendous shocker
Alright, it’s not quite the GLA yet – this is the Concept GLA which, as per the
Mercedes norm
, previews the production car that’s expected to arrive next year. Based on the
A-Class
’s MFA platform, which has already spun off the B-Class and
CLA
, the GLA is expected to go head-to-head the Audi Q3,
BMW X1
Range Rover Evoque
. Of course, it’s too early for any sort of engine-related detail, though the concept is powered by a 211hp 2.0-litre petrol engine that also features in the A-Class. So expect a range similar to the A-Class’s for the production version – and yes, a range-topping GLA45 AMG, based on the
A45
CLA45 AMG
, and rivalling the Audi RS Q3, is in the offing.
And while, of course, the idea of these small off roaders will always be perverse to some, as they go this one isn’t a bad looking thing. Naturally, the production version will feature less spangliness around the head- and tail-lights, and possibly some slightly smaller wheels, but on the whole, you’re looking at the finished article. Inside, meanwhile, it’s clear that Mercedes is planning a cabin architecture similar to the other MFA-based models – in other words, expect to see more of that slightly awkward tablet-style infotainment display. Sadly, though, we doubt the rather cool 'extruded' dash finish will make it through to production.
Lattice dash panel looks cool
Expect to see the concept officially unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show next week, with news of the production version likely to start filtering through toward the end of this year.
