The Mille Miglia
to film
unless you have a helicopter. The route winds its way with maximum resistance through pretty much every village imaginable, but capturing fast-moving cars with the sheer weight of traffic is a total pain.
In fact it could be argued that there's a better film to be made covering the support cars that follow all the exotica. Seas of new Jags, Mercs and Porsches, fully branded, jostling for position and becoming more aggressive as the event proceeds.
The way it worked was this: Neil would try and get ahead far enough to set up the camera and attempt to anticipate when we'd pass. Often this didn't work. And when it did, myself and Al were so pleased to see him that we waved like idiot tourists. You will see this in the film. It annoyed Neil. I can see why.
I hope the film gives you a feel for what a special event the Mille Miglia is though. The variety of cars, the spectacle, the sincere feeling that it could only happen in Italy.
And if you ever get the chance to be driven by Al Buncombe in a Jaguar C-Type, say yes.
