A charge of driving without due care and attention has led to just 12 months ban for a new driver who stopped in the outside lane of the M25. Her actions resulted in the death of another driver in the ensuing accident.
19 year old Laura Rushton from Woodley pleaded guilty when she appeared at Harlow Magistrates’ Court in Essex yesterday. She also pleaded guilty to a charge of speeding.
The court heard that Rushton had been travelling back from Norwich with a friend when she was spotted by police. They followed as they believed her to be speeding and subsequently recorded her travelling at 95mph.
Unable too attract her attention, they pulled alongside Rushton's Clio on the inside lane and motioned for her to pull over on the hard shoulder. Rushton panicked and stopped in the outside lane of the M25. A van following swerved to avoid the car and lost control before hitting a concrete post killing the driver. Two passengers were also thrown out of the vehicle and seriously injured.
Rushton was fined £500 and banned for 12 months. She will also be required to retake her driving test.
