"Possibly the most famous Ferrari known to exist" may be pushing it a little, but there's no denying this is a very well-known Testarossa. Even without the headline and the numberplate, a white Testarossa means one thing - Miami Vice.
Worth it for the car phone
This car, chassis number #63631, was the very Testarossa used in the show from the second episode of the third series onwards. The story goes that Ferrari filed a lawsuit against the Corvette-based Daytona Spyder used initially, with the dispute settled by the Daytona's disappearance and the arrival of two Testarossas. They were both black, but then repainted white for better visibility in night scenes. Hence the rather odd white with cream colour combo.
Even ignoring the TV provenance, this is a very desirable Testarossa as one of the early mono specchio (single mirror) cars. The mileage is very low at 16,124, the car having been in storage from 1990 until this year. It has Ferrari Classiche authentication and a recent $8,000 service at Shelton Ferrari in Florida.
The car is being sold at Mecum's Monterey auction on August 15 at the Del Monte golf course. Yes, really. There isn't an auction estimate yet but given the only single mirror Testarossa on PH is £165,000 the Miami Vice car will surely exceed that by a long way. Bidder registration is $100...
