For many fans Imprezas don't get any better than the 22B. That widebody two-door shape, the limited production and the fact is arrived just at the Impreza's popularity summit. Appropriately enough the Tommi Makinen Evo arrived a year after the 22B, arguably both representing the best of their respective breeds.
Quilted upholstery an odd extra
Simply looking at the images of this 22B are nearly enough to cast aside any objective concerns. It's just right. Not stylish, not fashionable, not subtle but oozing with intent and menace and appeal for the right people. 'Stance' has unfortunate connotations when mentioned around cars nowadays but the way the 22B sits couldn't be better. Those arches swollen over gold wheels, the gigantic foglights, the spoiler. You just want to drive it, don't you?
There are a few caveats though. Despite appearances, a few aspects of this 22B aren't perfect. It is a Japanese car rather than one of the UK allocation, it's remapped and has 'electric adjustable suspension.' One of the images shows a Tein Electronic Damping Force controller; a little internet digging reveals that Tein dampers were used on the 'ring record Impreza so they're hardly cheapo replacements. Indeed lower suspension would contribute to that fantastic stance. So not standard but hardly ruined either. Wonder what an original 22B suspension setup would be from Subaru now?
A shape that captured so many minds
The bigger AP brakes are a nice upgrade but this 22B must be the only to have 'leather seats with quilted inserts'. Most bizarre. But the fundamental 22B characteristics that have made it a legend should remain intact, only with a little more quilting.
And the price? £42,995. Pulled a funny face? Yeah. But there were only ever 400 22Bs and there doesn't appear to be another for sale at the moment. And good luck finding one of 16 UK cars... The Impreza's glory days have gone, we know that. However, it could be argued that late-90s era was a highpoint for the WRC's recent popularity as the appeal waned through the early 2000s. Look at the money being commanded by 70s and 80s rally reps now. It's going to take a dedicated fanboy to stump up £40K for a 22B but, given the reaction already to the Fleet NotImpreza, there must be one or two out there.
