The biggest surprise of qualifying at Catalunya was that Marc Marquez failed to make it seven out of seven pole positions after crashing during qualifying. Would not being on pole affect the current champion? Not a chance...
Battling for Honda's 100th MotoGP win
With the Yamaha duo of Rossi and Lorenzo taking off like a pair of scalded cats, Marc didn't have it all his own way on the opening few laps, but very quickly the Spaniard slipped past Lorenzo and set off after leader Rossi. Could The Doctor fend off Marc? Or more to the point, would the weather hold off?
As the dark clouds gathered overhead, a small mistake by Marc was pounced upon by Pedrosa, resulting in a strong response from Marquez that gave Rossi another few metres of breathing space. Then having closed the gap, Marc clipped Rossi's rear tyre, running himself wide and losing further distance. Yet after every mistake it only took a few laps until Marc was right back on his tail and sure enough, with seven laps to go he made it past. And then it got a bit confusing...
Hand waving by Marc and Dani after a yellow flag overtake saw Rossi regaining him the lead as the rain started. But was it worth pitting for wets? With so few laps left it wasn't and thankfully the rain stopped pretty quickly.
The Marquez family celebrates!
Four to go and Marc was ahead with clear air when Pedrosa mugged Rossi at the end of the straight. It could have been game over, but Dani was looking pretty excitable. Possibly a touch too much...
An incredible last lap saw Pedrosa clip Marquez, running Dani wide and giving the win to Marc and second to Rossi. What a race! Seven from seven for Marc and 100 wins for Honda in MotoGP.
A crash strewn Moto2 race was won fairly comfortably by Rabat with Vinales in second and a cracking scrap saw Zarco sneak third. A crash on the first lap ruined Lowes' race while Rea finished 22nd.
The Moto3 race was a fairly easy win for Alex Marquez, however the battle for second and the save of the century by Ajo made it all worth watching. Also hats off to Bastianini for his second spot, the youngster is a real star of the future.
