⭕ VEHICLE SUMMARY
Hot hatch fans form an orderly queue - an original and well cared for Campaign GTI.
Starting life as a humble family hatchback, the Golf was launched in 1974, moving away from the rear-mounted, rear-wheel-drive layout that VW was known for, instead opting for a front-engined, front-wheel-drive format. The GTI version of the Golf was first seen in 1975, with production starting in 1976.
The GTI was given a beefed-up body kit with wider arches and the now iconic red frame around the grille. Originally fitted with a 1.6-litre engine producing ~108bhp, mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox. Weighing in at only ~810kg, the GTI could reach 60mph in ~9.2 seconds — very quick in the ’70s.
Coming to market after ~4 years with our vendor, this particular car is a 1983 Golf GTI Campaign - a limited-edition run-out model marking the end of the Mk1 GTI in the UK. It came with a distinctive mix of extra equipment, including Pirelli “P-slot” alloy wheels, a factory sliding sunroof, green-tinted glass, and twin headlamps. Inside, it featured a leather-trimmed steering wheel, striped seat upholstery, and the familiar red GTI grille. Importantly the 1.6-litre was upgraded to the later 1.8-litre, which would go on to be used in the Mk2.
Delivering the same lively performance as the standard GTI, the Campaign combined the classic hot hatch driving experience with a touch of exclusivity, making it one of the most sought-after Mk1 variants today.
