Description
This Porsche 964 RS recreation is spectacular in every way. It is based on a 1993 964 Carrera 4 (more about that later) and no expense has been spared to ensure that it looks and drives superbly.
Mechanically, it is very well sorted. The engine was treated to a top-end rebuild by Northway Porsche in January 2013 at 107,800 miles. New brake discs and pads were fitted just before that. The clutch and starter motor were replaced in May 2012, and the steering rack refurbished a year before. There is a detailed history file documenting all this and much more work.
The key to any RS replica is its suspension and this car excels in this respect, with its KW V3 coilover set up. This ensures great handling and feedback while retaining a reasonable amount of compliance required for bumpy UK roads. The geometry is set up such that you're hard pushed to know you're driving a Carrera 4; indeed, the four-wheel drive actually enhances the handling, especially on wet roads.
The Porsche is finished in white with eye-catching blue decals and Cup wheels. With the correct badging, it's hard to spot it's not a genuine RS. Yes, it does have a sunroof but, then, so did a handful of the genuine cars. The exterior is all in excellent condition.
The interior is also finished to RS standards. There are Recaro seats and Willans racing harnesses, carpeted rear section, lightweight door cards and pulls, and Porsche Club Sport steering wheel. The radio has been replaced with an RS blanking plate and even the Carrera 4 diff lock has been removed and the panel replaced with the correct Carrera 2 item! Again, the interior is in great condition. A modern Clifford alarm and remote locking system is installed.
Here, then, is a convincing RS recreation that is well sorted and a joy to drive and to look at. It's equally at home on road or track, and the best thing is, it's £100,000 less than the real thing, so you can go out and enjoy it without worry!
If, on the other hand, you would rather have a standard 964 Carrera 4, it wouldn't be difficult to return it to standard. The wheels could be painted silver, the side stripes removed, the rear bumper changed for a standard one. Inside, the rollcage can be removed, the seats and door panels swapped for standard 964 items, and rear seats refitted. And the good news is, the parts you would remove would sell for much more than the cost of replacement standard bits - so a profitable exercise!
This Porsche 964 RS recreation will be put through an independent mechanical inspection, serviced and MoTed before sale, and issued with a six-month warranty. It is featured in the March 2014 issue of GT Porsche magazine.
