Description
1974 Porsche 911 2.7
Unveiled to the public in September 1973 in Frankfurt, the G-Series 911, with its impact bumpers, formed the new look for the 911 that was to take it through to 1989 and the launch of the restyled 964. As collector interest in early 911s reaches new heights, demand for the early ‘impact bumper’ cars has been following suit. But it’s not all about investment potential, cars like our ’74 911 Coupé are simply fantastic cars to drive and own, brimming with that classic Porsche character that has gradually ironed out of them in recent years, yet still retaining that innate usability and rugged qualities that made them the everyday supercar.
This left-hand drive example in its original, and delightfully early 70s, Light Yellow is fresh from substantial restoration work and is now in exceptional condition throughout. What’s more, it has a few twists to make it that much more of a fun car for those early Sunday morning drives.
Built in September ’73, it is around the 700th G-Series off the Stuttgart production line. It was delivered new to the United States were it stayed until a few years ago it was imported to the UK. The advantage of it being a US import is that the shell is not corroded, nor has it ever been corroded. It has never had any welding or repair underneath; it is just as it left the factory. Careful inspection has proved that it has never been involved in any accidents either, so it was the perfect shell from which to build a fast road 911.
Steel Carrera arches have been professionally fitted and we have stripped the shell down and given it a full repaint to the highest standard in its correct colour, including the engine bay.
The suspension has been slightly lowered and uprated, and the brakes (including calipers) are all new. It wears deep-dish Fuchs wheels and the majority of the chrome has been replaced with black trim. It’s a fabulous looking car.
Whilst the engine and gearbox were out for the repaint we had the gearbox fully rebuilt with new bearings and synchromesh. The engine has evidently been rebuilt in the past and we’re sure that rebuild involved fitting ‘S’ cams as it goes extremely well!
Finally the interior has been refreshed with new RS-style period bucket seats, new lightweight door cards, a lightweight carpet set with rear seats deleted and a new Momo Prototipo steering wheel.
The result is a slightly lighter, slightly firmer, slightly faster version of the 911 2.7. As such, it’s an absolute delight to drive. It is now tax exempt and, being left-hand drive, perfect for continental trips.
