Description
The Porsche 911 Turbo needs no introduction to the motoring enthusiast. It is a legendary supercar that has well and truly inked its way into the annals of combustion engine history. Like any highly strung, performance orientated machine, the Turbo demands respect. It requires attention at all times and it deserves a fair share of tender loving care to massage it’s not insignificant ego. When everything is in harmony, the driver is rewarded with the Nirvana of driving pleasure. Be warned, get it wrong and the potential for disaster approaches quickly on the horizon; a bit like a parachute jump when the first chute has failed.
Back in 1995, some twenty years on from the ground breaking introduction of the original 930 Turbo, Porsche launched its third and final version of an air-cooled 911. It turned out to be the pick of the bunch by some distance and in many ways remains the enduring love of many a Porsche driver.
The latest incarnation of the 911 was probably the most significantly changed model to date. The traditional upright headlights were replaced with 959 style versions for better aerodynamics. The fully integrated front and rear bumpers emphasised the smooth elegance of the classic 911 shape. It was also the first 911 with a newly designed aluminium chassis components.
The new 993 Turbo also featured a critically acclaimed twin turbo 3.6 litre engine proving 408 bhp @ 5,750 rpm and 540 Nm @ 4,500 rpm. Put simply, it was the world’s fastest production car both in terms of acceleration and deceleration (0-100km/h 4s and 100-0km/h 2.3s) and was the only production car equal to the performance of the legendary Porsche 959. It featured a new all-wheel drive system and high performance brakes – affectionately referred to as the “Big Reds” providing a deceleration performance of 1931 bhp
Whilst the new 993 turbo was arguably the ultimate supercar of its time, unlike some of its more exotic foes, the Turbo was also a very comfortable car and enjoyable daily driver. It quickly gained a reputation for exceptional dependability and reliability. It was also agile and designed to incorporate a list of high-tech components while still maintaining the authentic shape of the 911. A large fixed rear spoiler was fitted at the rear to provide improved downforce and optimise cool air supply to the twin intercoolers. Visual presence and stance was improved as a result of the car being 6 cm wider than the standard 993 Carrera.
