How long is it since you last saw a really nice Porsche 944? The answer to that would normally be ‘ages’ because these Harm Lagaay-styled coupes are becoming a very rare sight now, but for the next owner of this stunning 43,000-mile example that experience will be a daily pleasure.

The 924 – Porsche’s attempt to broaden its dangerously narrow model range back in the mid-1970s – was a car borne out of adversity, but the 1982-on 944 was a different matter. Superbly engineered to deliver a fine mix of torquey performance, low running costs, surprising practicality for a young family or rewarding handling for a solo enthusiast, it became Porsche’s most successful model until the new-generation Boxster and 997 flat sixes of the mid-1990s.

In near-flawless Kalahari Beige with period-perfect pinstriped velour seats, this concours-winning 1985 UK example – one of the last pre-facelift first-generation 2.5 litre cars – accurately reflects the owner’s description of ‘excellent inside and out’. It has won Porsche Club GB concours events and was used for all the 944 photography (over 20 photos) in Peter Morgan’s book ‘Original Porsche: 924/944/928’, a copy of which will be provided with the car.
