● Rare special edition with numbered plaque
● Subtly modified in all the right areas
● Huge history file which shows a great deal of care and attention (and meticulous record-keeping!)
𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
Widley regarded as a high-water mark in the pantheon of Golf GTIs, the Mark 5 mated a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine to an engaging chassis and mixed in the liveability that makes the model such a fantastic everyday performance car. In the wake of other successful tombola birthday special editions, the Edition 30 was conceived to mark the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the car that arguably set the template for the hot hatch.
With power ramped up by 15% to 230hp, 18-inch BBS alloy wheels, body coloured side skirts, rear bumper and a deeper front spoiler, it adds up to a subtle but effective reworking of an already accomplished car, though it is of note that the chassis was left untouched as it wasn’t regarded as needing further attention.
This particular example builds on the subtle modifications with a few of its own: a Revo induction kit, pre-cat deletion, anti-lift kit and longer paddles with which to operate the DSG gearbox, to name but a few. Although on close inspection there are a few cosmetic items that a fastidious long-term owner would want to address, the oily bits show evidence of a great deal of love and attention and it promises to be a riot to drive.
With an expanding family leading to a reluctant sale, this is the ideal car for someone looking for a subtle fast daily or, equally, a marque enthusiast to add to their collection. Either way, we’re sure that the new owner will enjoy both the drive and the admiring glances from those in the know.

● Inch thick file of service records, with receipts and MoT certs dating back to 2013
● Two keys
● Clean MOT valid to July 2024
● V5 present in owner’s name
● Accompanying the car is a letter from VW UK confirming the build-number - 1233 - along with the official numbered plaque and, although it's not installed on the car, it is included in the sale
𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
● Heated, electrically adjustable black leather and iconic check cloth seats
● Other mod cons include electric mirrors, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, auto-headlights, climate control, DSG paddles on steering wheel
● The owner reports that everything works with no squeaks or rattles when driving and that the air con blows nice and cold
● The door cards are in very good condition as are the carpets and plastic trim
● There are a few cosmetic issues: a small hole in driver’s seat bolster, minor headlining sag around the interior lights and some cracking to gear shift gaiter
● Some useful upgrades, too: an aftermarket Bluetooth dongle fitted to OEM stereo and a Seat Cupra DSG paddle upgrade (larger paddles fitted to OEM switches)
● Edition 30 sill plates mark it out as the special edition though, as noted above, the official numbered plaque has yet to be fitted
● Very tidy boot with space saver spare under the floor
● In all, generally very tidy and usable with a few areas that a new owner may wish to address
𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
● Still a handsome looking car in our eyes, even in practical five-door form
● Tornado red paintwork, which is generally well preserved
● Driver's front wing was replaced by a previous owner to address common wheel arch rust problem
● Nearside front wing will need some paintwork to address similar rust issue (small bubbles present at top of wheel arch but have not broken through)
● New front grill fitted in 2022 to replace original which had faded
● A few small paint chips have been touched up with colour-matched paint
● The windscreen scuttle is cracked but a brand new VW replacement is provided
● Again, there are a few cosmetic issues: a thumb-sized area lacquer peel to the roof, some surface rust at the front end of the sills, a minor 5p sized dent in passenger door and gravel rash to the front bumper and bonnet
● The nearside rear passenger door lock is also said to be sticky
● The Pescara alloy wheels are in generally good condition but show a little kerb rash
● A matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres are fitted with good tread all round
● Overall, it's looking generally good for its age but would benefit from a front end respray and wheel refurb to present in top cosmetic condition
𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹
● 2.0-litre FSI turbo engine good for 230hp as standard
● Six-speed DSG gearbox with Sport mode
● A variety of performance-focussed modifications:
R-tech twin-plate turbo heat-shield
CTS turbo-outlet pipe
Pre-cat delete (still road legal)
Rev-G diverter valve
Hel stainless braided brake hoses
Performance discs and pads (surface rust in the photos is due to it being freshly washed)
Racingline front suspension bushes (anti-lift kit - improves steering)
Vibra-Technics dog-bone mount upgrade (reduces engine / gearbox movement)
ECS front sub-frame locking kit (addresses common problem of sub-frame movement)
● The seller estimates that the current modifications applied to the car should lift the power output from 230hp to around 250-260hp by freeing up factory intake and exhaust restrictions
● Two new OEM front calipers were fitted less about 5,000 miles ago and the cam-follower was replaced at the same time
● Battery replaced 2021
● Last serviced June 2023
● The owner reports that the car is ready for a "Stage 2" remap which should raise the engine's power to over 300hp / 300ft lbs without further modification
𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆
Mechanically maintained regardless of cost by the current owner, this rare Edition 30 has also had all the usual issues attended to and received some further tweaking. While there are a few cosmetic items required to bring it back to its absolute best, the driving experience should more than make up for that in the meantime.
