𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
The replacement for BMW’s retro-styled Z3 roadster was a considerably more sophisticated and modern affair which showcased the head of design Chris Bangle’s ‘flame surfacing’ approach. Though not without its critics when it was launched, to our eyes the styling of the E85 Z4 has stood the test of time and still looks fresh today.
The 3.0si model was notable for a more powerful version of BMW’s N52 straight six. Rated at 262hp and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, it makes for an enjoyable driver’s car that can be used whatever the weather when specified, as this one is, with heated seats and a wind deflector.
They’ve not been immune from corrosion issues, however, as this one demonstrates: bubbling on all four corners led the owner to have all the wings replaced and the car resprayed in 2021. That’s a response that reflects just how well this car has been kept over the years. A comprehensive set of invoices shows that it’s wanted for nothing and its condition reflects that.
Don’t be put off by the aftermarket wheels either; these were installed to replace factory items that were letting the air out and they suit the car well. So if you’re looking for a roadster that can be used all year round, looks great, drives well, sounds sweet and has a fantastic maintenance record then this Z4 could be the one for you.
𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
• Registered new 19 July 2007 as a BMW demonstrator
• Acquired by the first and only private owner in March 2008 with 1,091 miles on the clock
• The car is accompanied by the original document pack, invoices for everything the car has received and a hand-written record (with costings) of the service records which is bravely totted up
• Stamps in the service book are not all dated but showing servicing at a main dealer at 15,395 miles (July 2010) and then at an independent garage at 21,809 miles (July 2011), 29,843 miles (July 2013), 39,213 miles (July 2016) and 49,855 miles (May 2021)
• It had new coil springs in 2012, aftermarket wheels were fitted in 2013 (due to the originals losing air) and the ABS pump was refreshed in 2016
• In July 2021, the car was showing corrosion to all four wings and these were replaced and the car resprayed in its original colour, paintwork ceramic coated and the underside waxoyled
• The current MOT is valid until 3 August 2024
• V5 present in the owner’s name
• Three keys
• HPI clear
𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
• Whoever specified the interior did a good job; BMW Individual Nappa leather in caramel and Individual piano black trim makes for a great combination and the comfort pack has also been added
• It’s all in very good order too; the driver’s seat shows a little creasing and wear but in general it’s aged very well
• The carpets look to be pristine and are protected by matching mats
• Both seats are heated and electrically adjusted with a memory on the driver’s side
• Refinements include xenon headlights, cruise control and rear parking sensors and the owner reports that everything is in full working order
• An optional wind deflector is also fitted
• The boot is generally clean and tidy
• Overall, it’s all looking very good for its age
𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
• Following a respray in the original Monaco blue in 2021, the paintwork is in very good condition and, with no dents or scratches, the car looks very smart
• The aftermarket wheels suit the car well although on closer inspection are now showing a little corrosion and one is slightly kerbed; genuine BMW Z4 wheels are now widely available on eBay, however, if the next owner so desires
• Tyres are Dunlop SP sport all round which are in excellent condition
• The owner tells us that the car has always been garaged when not in use and the condition of the hood seems to bear this out as it’s looking really good
• The underside shows a little surface corrosion commensurate with age but generally looks very clean
• In summary, it’s stylish and understated in a dark metallic blue and its condition reflects the limited mileage and care that the owner has lavished upon it
𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹
• Being the desirable 3.0si model, under the bonnet is the more powerful version of BMW’s N52 3-litre straight six which is rated at 262hp
• 6 speed manual gearbox
• Rear wheel drive
• The owner describes the car as running ‘like new’ and he should know, having owned it since it was virtually new!
• With the hood down, you get to enjoy one of the great six-cylinder soundtracks
𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆
The E85 generation Z4 has much to recommend it and this one is a fantastic looking example, which must surely be one of the best presented examples for sale in the UK at the moment. Fastidiously looked after, in a great colour combination and ready to go, it looks a great way to enjoy top-down motoring all year round.
