Introduced in the UK in 2017, VW’s smallest member of the GTI range soon proved to be a hit. A high-quality interior helped in the showroom but light weight, a torquey engine and a snappy gearchange sealed the deal on the road.

Although not endowed with a huge power figure, the 1.0-litre triple engine is mated to a suitably upgraded chassis which is more than enough to make the sub-one ton supermini an engaging drive and its diminutive size means that it can be hustled along a B road with ease.

The up! GTI is no longer available to buy new, a fact that many enthusiastic owners have bemoaned, but we’re pleased to offer this lightly used example which also comes with the benefit of a couple of useful (and easily reversible) mods.

It’s often commented that the 3-cylinder engine sounds a little like a 911 and here that’s turned up a notch with the installation of a cat back stainless steel exhaust. Adding some extra pep on the intake side is a Forge induction kit. The original parts are supplied in case they’re not to your taste.

With limited mileage and in lovely condition, this delightful little five door GTI makes a great case for itself as an everyday usable performance car that should be cheap to run and buckets of fun.

𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

• Registered new 24 February 2019

• Main dealer services showing on the electronic record are in July 2020 @4,600 miles and July 2021 @6,773 miles

• Since then, the owner tells us that he has serviced it in 2022 and a oil and filter service has just been carried out ready for the new owner

• There are invoices for upgraded parts

• No advisories in the MOT history

• The current, advisory free, MOT is valid until 18 January 2025

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿

• With trademark GTI-spec tartan cloth, a flat bottomed leather steering wheel and the funky red highlights throughout the cabin, it’s certainly differentiated from the rest of the VW up range and sets the tone for the sportier drive

• The cabin appears to be in very good condition throughout, though the owner tells us that it will receive a full valet prior to sale

• Five door practicality makes the rear seats considerably more accessible, not that they show any great signs of heavy traffic

• There weren’t any optional extras specified but the standard equipment should prove more than adequate with air conditioning, heated seats and smartphone integration

• The boot is clean and tidy and under the floor houses a spare wheel and the original tool kit

𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿

• The car looks sharp in white with a black roof, black mirrors and 17 inch alloy wheels fronting red brake callipers

• The paintwork is original, save for the front bumper which has been painted, and looks to be in good order throughout

• In general, the alloys look great but there is some minor kerbing to the front wheels which would need a refurb to bring them back to their best

• The owner reports that the tyres all have good tread depth

• Underneath it all looks as clean as you would hope for on a car of this age

• The aftermarket exhaust is neatly integrated at the rear

• 999cc three cylinder engine rated at 113hp as standard

• Six speed manual gearbox

• Front wheel drive

• An uprated exhaust is reputed to make these sound ‘more like a 911’ so it promises to both go and sound better than standard
