𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
The ‘Icon’ special edition has been a recurring theme across different generations of MX-5, with four distinct versions made available in 2000, 2005, 2007 and 2016. The Mk3 (or NC) variant, launched in 2007, ostensibly paid tribute to the diminutive roadster’s inspiration in the form of British sports cars and thus was available in red, white and blue.
At the time of launch, it was announced that just 1250 were to be produced in total, 875 of which were the 1.8-litre version and only 375 were the 2.0-litre version that we see here.
In addition to some useful trim upgrades including Icon-branded leather seats, climate control air-conditioning and chrome style roll hoops, of particular interest to PHers is the addition of a limited slip differential to the 2.0-litre model.
But nice though the ‘Icon’ specification is, the main attraction here is the condition of this example. It’s had just one owner, a qualified vehicle engineer, who has looked after it very carefully. Reportedly dry stored and only used sparingly in the dry, it’s racked up just over 9,000 miles and looks a lot like it’s just rolled out of the showroom.
Its Copper Red Mica paintwork shows nary a blemish and the underside was Waxoyled when new so the seller reports no signs of the dreaded tin worm. The engineer owner serviced it himself every year and his careful stewardship is reflected not only in the state of the car today but also an MOT history that shows not so much as a single advisory.
Whether you’re looking for a high days and holidays car that you could take to shows or just want a box-fresh MX-5 to enjoy on the road, then you’ll surely struggle to find another example that is in this condition. It’s probably a little young to be featured in a museum collection but if the next owner keeps it in the manner to which it has become accustomed then it’s surely a possibility one day.

• It’s a classy-looking cabin with piano black dashboard inserts, black leather seats with red stitching and ‘Icon’ logos embossed in the headrests

• Protecting the carpet are Icon-branded floor mats which are in excellent condition

• The 16-inch alloys all look to be unmarked and wear a set of recent new Yokohama Advan A11a tyres
• The roof also looks to be unblemished, and the chrome style roll hoops are pristine
• The underside was Waxoyled from new and it’s reportedly only been used in the dry; consequently, the seller reports no signs of any rust
• In summary, it looks almost as-new

The MX-5 is a perennial favourite, combining wind in the hair motoring with an involving driving experience and, from the Mk3, modern levels of usability. This example is in a great colour combination and a condition that’s as close to new as you’re likely to find at this point.
