Look out of the window and on most days at the moment you’ll be forgiven for thinking that Spring may never come but, trust us, it’ll be here soon. And when it arrives, what better way to waft around with the wind in your hair than in a comfy soft top?

The Swedes have a long tradition of building four-seater convertibles and we Brits have been keen consumers of them. Produced until 2012, the second generation 9-3 convertible was Saab’s offering and you’ll find many of them with substantial mileages which is tribute to their popularity and build quality.

This example is the top of the range Aero V6 and, with a 2.8 litre turbocharged V6 that’s been lightly breathed on, it’s no slouch. Being of Swedish origin, of course, there’s no need to wait until the sun comes out to enjoy it either, as thermonuclear-level heated seats and great headlights, bi-xenon in this case, come as standard.

With its current owner for around 7 years, this car looks to have lived a pampered life, covering an average of just a couple of thousand miles a year during that time. The paintwork has been touched up, the wheels are immaculate and the roof in very good nick, which means that it still looks very smart. In a subtle colour scheme, it should be an ideal way to fly under the radar.

• As befits the range topper, the interior is very well appointed with lashings of beige leather

• As ever for a Saab, the dashboard is a masterpiece of understated design and still looks stylish today

• There’s all the modern accoutrements including electric heated seats, DVD sat nav, electric windows, power fold mirrors, climate control, cruise control and mobile preparation

• It’s all very well preserved with no marks to the leather and few signs of wear

• Naturally, the roof is electric and operates without any hitch

• Back in the boot, it all looks very neat and tidy and there’s a space saver spare under the floor

𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿

• The owner reports that he has had the paintwork refreshed during his ownership and the car certainly presents very smartly with straight bodywork and a glossy shine

• Distinctive black Saab 18 inch alloy wheels are unmarked and wear Continental tyres all round, though the MOT notes that one of the rears is worn at the edges

• The only area that shows its age a little is the underside of the front bumper which shows a few scratches but you have to be on your hands and knees to really see it

• The roof is in fine fettle and has a glass rear window for added practicality

• Underneath all looks very clean, too

• In all, it’s looking very well for its age

• 2792cc, turbo V6 usually good for 280hp but here remapped for 306hp

Saab remains a much-missed manufacturer and this powerful range-topping four-seater convertible is a reminder of why they were so popular. In lovely cosmetic condition and, having been well cared-for by its current owner, it should be good for many more years of top-down motoring for all the family.
