𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
Porsche’s 944 represented its third attempt to diversify away from being the one hit wonder manufacturer of its evergreen 911. First came the 928, then the entry-level 924 and, in 1982 the 944, derived from but significantly upgraded over the 924.
Until the launch of the Boxster/ Cayman, it was Porsche’s biggest selling sports car and if we fast-forward to 1989, the S2 was launched with a Porsche 3 litre four banger that was a far cry from the relatively modest Audi-sourced engine in the 924.
This car is a fairly early example of an S2 but don’t be expecting a eulogy on how fabulously original it is. For although its encyclopaedic history file shows a full main dealer history, in its latter years it has been stripped out and developed into the very lovely track car that you see here today.
It is, however, still road registered and retains its carpets in the front of the cabin as a concession to usability but the rest of the car has been tailored specifically for the track and can be used for sprints and hillclimbs, as well as track days.
In fact, the artefacts of both competition and track events remain in the form of scrutineering stickers and numbers. The rest of the car has been beautifully detailed and the history suggests that it has been maintained regardless of cost. If you’re looking for a really well-prepared modern classic track car that can also indulge in a spot of competition, then this one looks a cracker.
𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
● Registered 14 Feb 1989
● Original owner’s manuals in original Porsche-branded leather wallet
● Comprehensive records of service work, maintenance and parts installed and old MOT certficates
● Huge amounts spent over the years; looks to have been maintained on a no-expense-spared basis, initially by Porsche main dealers and latterly by a mix of specialists and main dealers – for details, please check out the photo gallery
● £15k spent in the five years previous to current ownership with significant work including new sills in 2015 and an engine rebuild in 2016
● All four wheel arches and both sills freshly resprayed and whole car detailed, including the engine bay
● Two keys
● Current MOT expires 21 Feb 2025
● HPI clear
● Please note that the 944 number plate will not be sold with the car but is available by separate negotiation
𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
● Corbeau Sprint racing bucket seats in black with blue inserts, and TRS four-point harnesses to match
● There’s carpet in the front as a nod to its road usability but the rest of the car is stripped to minimise weight
● A half cage is installed with padding on the front sections
● Momo flat bottomed alcantara racing wheel with Porsche-branded centre push horn
● Carbon door panels with fabric door pulls for the full racing look
● A fire extinguisher and passenger foot rest complete the competition makeover
● Although minus a radio, the dashboard is fully functional, and the electric windows operate just as they should
● In many ways it’s quite plush for a track car, and the fittings are all in very good order
𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
● The car is presented in an eye-catching colour scheme: matt brown over white with bronze stripe and Porsche decals
● The wrap has one small section on a roof rail which is perhaps not as tidy as it should be but the arches and sills have recently been painted and the wheels are pristine; the overall effect is stunning
● The bodywork looks to be very straight and the paintwork and wrap look to be in very good order following a recent detailing session
● On the painted Porsche wheels, Yokohama tyres are installed all round, to match the decals
● Extra style points are awarded for pop up headlights
● The underside looks nice and clean
● Overall, it’s very eye-catching and cuts quite a dash
𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹
● The very tidy engine bay houses the 2969cc Porsche dual overhead cam, 16 valve inline four cylinder engine, nestling under a strut brace
● Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transaxle gearbox, to the benefit of weight distribution
● AST adjustable suspension has been installed and the instructions on how to carry out the adjustment are provided
● The vendor advises that the battery is on a trickle charger but will be checked prior to handover and a new one supplied if necessary
● The car reportedly starts, goes and stops very well and sounds amazing
𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆
A fantastic example of Porsche’s eighties front-engined coupe that has been fastidiously maintained and beautifully prepared for track and competition use. The next owner will be the envy of the paddock!
