𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
It’s often said that the Japanese manufacturers keep all their most interesting cars in the home market and this hot Civic was no exception. Launched in Japan back in 1997, the EK9 was the first Civic to receive the Type R name and such was the jealousy in the UK that it has become a favourite with grey importers.
For beneath the meek nineties hatchback styling lurks a monster of an engine: the B16 DOHC 1.6-litre four cylinder engine was blueprinted and rated at 185hp at a dizzy 8,200rpm, with peak torque at 7,500rpm. Make no mistake, this is an engine that thrives on high revs.
Featuring a part seam-welded monocoque shell, it weighs in at just over a ton which was enough to make for a quick car in its time. It also rewards keen drivers with a snappy five-speed manual gearbox, helical front limited-slip diff and front and rear double wishbone suspension to deliver dynamics that belie its subtle appearance. Talk about a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
This example has been pampered since its import to the UK with a new timing belt, cat back exhaust, refreshed suspension components and a front end respray to address some minor cosmetic issues. With a fresh MOT, it’s ready to hit the road but looks like it would be equally at home on the track. Wherever it goes, it’s sure to pique the interest of JDM fans everywhere who will know what may elude the average member of the public: the driver will be having a riot.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
• If you hadn’t spotted the relatively subtle exterior cues as to this car’s performance potential, then you surely can’t miss the signature red Recaros when you open the door
• They’re in good condition here, with some moderate wear to the bolsters and some discolouration but they look like they would still hold you firmly in place
• There are a couple of small holes in the base of the driver’s seat but otherwise the interior looks to be in very good order
• A deep dished steering wheel comes with natty red stitching, but the original is also provided if that’s more to your taste
• The distinctive titanium gearknob is mounted on an aftermarket bracket to move it further back, which can be removed if desired
• There’s air conditioning and a Bluetooth radio and the owner reports that everything works well without any faults
• The boot is without a parcel shelf but does have holes cut into the trim to allow access to the strut tops and what looks like adjustable dampers
𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
• Finished in Championship White, the paintwork presents well, having had a recent front end respray to address some stone chips and minor scuffs
• The bodywork all appears very straight, though the metal window trims and wiper arms show some slight wear, and there are a few very small imperfections on the nearside door handle and the door mirror casings
• Refurbished bronze 16-inch Rays alloys look the part and, although are missing the centre caps, appear to be unmarked
• The tyres are Toyo Proxes and were replaced in Jan 2022
• Underneath looks to be nice and clean with only a little surface corrosion here and there
• Overall, it looks very smart and will certainly turn heads of those in the know
𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹
• Under the bonnet lives the blueprinted 1590cc VTEC masterpiece
• There looks to be an Injen cold air intake kit installed, aimed at improving the mid range response, and an aftermarket radiator
• Slightly concealed behind the strut brace, the dampers seem to be adjustable as per the rears noted earlier
• The owner has installed a Fujitsubo cat back exhaust
• He reports that it starts, goes and stops really well and sounds great with no untoward noises
• The fresh MOT has no advisories
𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆
Almost 116hp per litre from a screaming 4 cylinder engine and a sub 1,100kg kerb weight are enticing enough, but look at the EK9 Type R’s full specification and it’s easy to see why it’s a popular import. This one looks in great shape, is freshly MOT’d and ready to go.
