Overview

Air-cooled Porsches are a perennial favourite. They need no introduction, with their instantly recognisable shape and even more distinctive sound. The roar of that famous flat-six engine as you power your way up a mountain switchback is one of those spine-tingling sensations which stays with you forever.

911s of this vintage offer superb performance compared to many of their contemporaries, thanks to that 2.7-litre engine, stiff chassis, and slippery aerodynamics. And this car remains unsullied by rear ducktails or flashy graphics, giving it a smartly tailored appearance, with the added flair of that fabulous metallic green paintwork.

And with its recently completed top-end engine rebuild steering it back towards its original 150hp, this 911 will be sure to provide plenty of fun at any speed. It is beautifully well preserved throughout, with smart black leatherette upholstery contrasting nicely with the green paintwork. Concertina bumpers add that ‘70s look, along with the clean lines of the body and uncluttered interior.

    • The paint is in excellent condition throughout, with only a few minor chips and lacquer blemishes to be found
    • There is a very small patch of bubbling on the front bumper
    • A previous owner had the chrome trim restored, and it still looks very presentable
    • The wheels are said to be original, and have been refurbished. The nearside rear sports a few chips, but otherwise they remain very presentable
    • Firestone tyres are said to remain in great shape with plenty of tread
    • The vendor informs us that the underside of the car was subject to extensive inspection by a classic restoration company last year, who removed and restored some areas of corrosion.

    Mechanical

    • 2,687cc, air-cooled, flat-six engine
    • Bosch mechanical fuel injection
    • The owner reports that the engine was treated to a top-end overhaul less than 500 miles ago
    • This included new cylinder liners, pistons and seals
    • A new clutch was fitted at the same time
    • The engine is said to start first time and settle down to idle at a steady 900 rpm
    • It reportedly pulls strongly and has a good throaty air-cooled roar under acceleration
    • The track rod ends have been upgraded to 930 units, which will improve handling
    • The seller also tells us that the brakes have been upgraded to 3.2 Carrera discs, and that they have plenty of wear left in the pads and discs

    Summary

Clearly this 911 has been well looked after, retaining a deep sparkle in its metallic paintwork and an air of gentle usage in the leatherette interior. It looks ready to grace any respectable destination, and will be sure to attract jealous glances wherever you go.

Add to this the legendary performance capabilities of the classic 911, and you have a car which will put a childish smile on your face whenever your right foot fancies. Or if you’re of a more competitive nature, there are plenty of events, rallies, and races where you can test the car’s — and your own — capabilities to the full.
