Overview
The Nissan GT-R R35 arrived in 2007, which begs the question: how does a now-17-year-old design still look so current? And still so flipping jaw-dropping for that matter? It’s such a cliche to say that this car could be launched today and it would look modern, but, well, the fact is it could.
And, when you see one like this, with its black metallic paint sparkling in the bright sunshine, and the diamond-turned faces of those 20-inch wheels similarly glinting away, it still looks as menacing as ever.
But, of course, to focus on its aesthetics is underselling the R35. The main reason why these cars are adored and revered is because they were a technical tour de force. So much so that to describe every detail would double the length of this listing. But the result, in damp conditions around the Nordschleife, was a 7:38.54 lap for the original version – beating the time of the then-current 911 Turbo.
Along with its design, the performance remains oh-so-current. Does 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 196mph sound tardy relative to today’s competition? No, it absolutely does not folks. And this car is a 2017MY, which included revised gearbox software for the six-speed dual-clutcher, increased torsional stiffness to smarten up the turn-in, and a wee bit more power (and an even wee-er bit more torque).
But, let’s face it, the GT-R was never slow, so that wasn’t the headline grabber. What was, was the 2017MY’s updated interior and more supple ride. There were far fewer buttons inside making the ergonomics a lot more cohesive, and vastly improved materials with a lot more lovely leather. Add together with the 2017MY’s softer spring rates (which can be firmed up again with the R button) the GT-R delivered a much broader spectrum of abilities – sure, it was still an crazed attack dog when you poked it but, equally, the definition a soppy, friendly pooch when you needed to cover big miles.
We’ve touched upon the impressive condition of this particular example, and that continues the deeper you delve. The interior seems as fresh as the exterior, it has a very comprehensive service history and a Litchfield power upgrade and upgraded exhaust to boot. In all, it’s lightly tastefully modified and ready to be enjoyed on the road or track.

Interior
- 2017MY Prestige Edition interior with leather covering more of the interior than on the Recaro edition
- High-spec includes automatic dual-zone climate control, electric windows, heated seats, leather upholstery, cruise control, voice activation, electronically adjustable dampers, keyelss entry and start, steering wheel mounted paddle shift, carbon trim, BOSE stereo and a full infotainment suite with customisable vehicle data readouts
- The leather trim still seems supple and, bar some oh-so-light creasing on the driver’s seat, appears pretty much as new
- The only item to report is that the seller also spotted a very slight paint chip on the driver's door interior near the handle which is reported to be about 0.5cm long and not particularly obvious
- Leather-trimmed steering wheel shows no obvious wear
- Door cards, dashboard and centre console appear to be unmarked
- Carpets look almost unworn and the original GT-R overmats also retain their deep pile
- Near-immaculate luggage compartment
- No reported issues, with everything working as it should do
Exterior
- This car looks sensational in its lustrous deep metallic black paint scheme
- 20-inch wheels with diamond-turned faces and black inner spokes present with no obvious nasty kerb attacks
- Orange Brembo brake calipers add a pinch of contrasting colour
- If you’re looking for an unmolested example this car has no external mods
- All the glass house and lenses appear to be in tip-top nick
- Bodywork remains in excellent condition for the age
- It’s hard to discern any issues from the pictures but the owner has very honestly reported a small scratch on the offside-rear panel behind the driver’s door, some slight bubbling under the wing mirrors (this is a common GTR issue) and a few stone chips around the nose
- Underbody is very clean for the age and mileage with no major issues – the worst of which appears to be some very light scuffing under the front splitter
Mechanical
- 3,799cc twin-turbo all-alloy V6 with double overhead camshafts per bank and 24 valves
- This engine was handbuilt by Shioya San and still looks fantastic when you lift the bonnet
- As standard, it’s rated at 570hp @ 6,800rpm and 469lb ft @ 3,300-5,800rpm but the renowned GT-R tuner Litchfield has reportedly informed the owner that the current power output is around 620bhp and top speed 202mph
- 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds and 196mph top speed
- Six-speed dual-clutch gearbox which can be controlled by either manual paddle shifters or left in automatic mode
- Electronically controlled all-wheel drive
- R mode can be applied independently to the traction control, suspension and gearbox which gives makes the car more responsive in each area
- Goodridge brake kit
- K&N filters
- Ghost immobiliser
- 2017MY GT-Rs were improved to increase torsional stiffness plus delivering a more comfortable ride
- No reported mechanical issues so, as with any GT-R, expect it to be monumentally quick with immense grip, poise and stopping power – in short, a blast
- American Frequency Intelligent Exhaust Valvetronic Titanium exhaust with valvetronic, which, the owner tells us, is quiet until the bypass valves open, when it gets…LOUD
- The car is fitted with launch control but the owner tells us that it’s never been deployed, presumably because it’s quite quick enough already
- Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres – we’re told these are brand new at the rear and the fronts have 5mm of tread left
Summary
Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of cars knows that a Nissan GT-R is something a bit special. The R35 was no exception and, if anything, took the GT-R brand to the next level with its technical prowess when it appeared in 2007. It’s been continuously perfected over time, and by the point that this 2017MY arrived it was more extreme in terms of performance but also a lot more laid back and GT-like as well. If this were a cake, one might say you can have and eat it. Yes, it’s a very complicated machine so it pays to buy wisely, and it’s hard to argue against this being a very wise choice – a clean and well cared for car, with relatively few miles, and in lovely, and largely original, spec.
