  • Comprehensive service history
  • Professionally modified and tuned to 362bhp+
  • Just two former owners

Overview

We think the Scirocco is about to have a bit of a moment. The Mk1 has long been sought after, while the Mk2 has started to become very collectible indeed (long overdue, in our opinion). But what if you want the benefits of a modern powertrain, reliability, safety features and toys, but with a whole heap of power? Then what you want is the Mk3 Scirocco R.

Based on the Mk 6 Golf R, but driving only the front wheels – and arguably significantly prettier – this is a facelift Mk3 Scirocco R. While Wolfsburg may have intended the two-litre turbo powertrain to push out a not-inconsiderable 280bhp, this particular example has been professionally fettled and breathed on to the tune of a now really quite bonkers 362.9bhp. Crikey.

With below average mileage for its age, a comprehensive service record and a long list of performance and styling modifications, it’s the perfect machine for anyone who wants all the benefits of a modern VW with an added dash of oomph. Whether you want a performance car to enjoy as is, or something that has already had plenty of high-quality, fundamental work carried out and is now ready for you to put your own stamp on, we think this hits the spot.

And as the great Nigel Tufnel says, it’s “none more black”. Which is nice.

Interior

  • Handsome, Scirocco exclusive sports seats front and rear, with electric squab adjustment to the fronts

  • Overall, the leather upholstery looks to be in good condition, with a little creasing to the outer bolster on the driver’s seat, but otherwise no issues to mention
  • Factory ICE system, offering radio, CD, phone connectivity and satellite navigation
  • A trio of factory gauges adorn the top of the dash, including an obligatory boost gauge (which is always a delight to see shooting up and down)
  • Dual zone air conditioning
  • Heated front seats
  • Automatic headlights
  • Electric windows and side mirrors
  • Multi-function steering wheel
  • Parking sensors
  • Black carpets with black ‘R’ branded overmats, which feature blue binding to the edges – overall all appear to be in good order with no threading or damage we could identify
  • The headlining is a dark grey and looks to be secure and free from any sagging, damage or staining
  • Black Forest Industries gear knob
  • At the rear there is a generous boot space, finished with dark grey carpeting and a fitted ‘Scirocco’ branded rubber floor protector
  • Under the boot floor, there is a space saver spare wheel along with what appears to be a full toolkit
  • All of the trim and switchgear in the cabin looks to be in fine fettle, with no warping, cracking or damage on show
  • The vendor reports no faults or issues with any of the cabin features

Exterior

  • Metallic black paintwork, which gives the car a mean, hunkered-down look
  • The paintwork is in reasonably good condition for the car’s age, with a few stone chips and blemishes, especially to the front bumper, leading bonnet edge and side mirror casings; there is also a scuff to the nearside corner of the rear bumper
  • All of the panels look to be in nice condition, with no damage, corrosion or misalignment we could discern
  • Similarly, the external trim and badging all looks to be present and correct, with no UV damage or cracking
  • The front and rear VW badges have been blacked out
  • Heavily tinted rear and side rear windows
  • Blacked out rear light lenses and smoked front lenses
  • Front ‘eyebrow’ trims fitted to the headlights
  • Maxton Design V2 front splitter and side skirts (the splitter does have a cracked section on the offside front corner)
  • Rear wiper delete
  • Underneath, everything looks to be clean and straight, with no significant corrosion and no damage we could see
  • There does appear to be some surface corrosion to the rear beam
  • 19-inch ‘Cadiz’ two-tone alloy wheels would benefit from a refurbishment, but are in perfectly usable condition
  • The wheels are shod with a matched set of Michelin Pilot Sport 5S tyres that all looks to be in great condition, with plenty of tread on display

  • 1,984cc four-cylinder turbocharged engine
  • Six-speed manual transmission
  • Front wheel drive, with factory XDS electronic front differential

  • Full set of NGK spark plugs
  • RS4 valve and cam follower kit
  • Powerflex anti-lift kit (front wishbones)

Summary

Few cars offer such a compelling combination of style, raw power and latent menace as this all-black Scirocco R. It’s a great base for a modified performance car to start with, and the owner has been clever in choosing mods that exploit the engine’s performance potential, but leave it eminently usable, even as a daily driver.

With a couple of minor fixes and a good polish, this handsome coupe could soon be the darling of any show ‘n’ shine you care to mention. There’s bags of potential here, and we can’t wait to see what the next owner does with it.

Just keep it black, okay? For Nigel.
