Overview
In today’s world of ever-evolving transport, Ford has applied the Mustang name to a five-door electric crossover, trading off past glories to try and convince petrolheads that plugged-in is the way to go. And while we’re not against EVs here at Pistonheads, not least because some of them are a barrel-load of fun, one thing we’d like to point out (as if we have to) is that THIS is a Mustang, not one of those. Certainly in our eyes. We doubt you’ll disagree.
Although it isn’t the first of the breed, the ’66 Mustang is spoken of in hushed tones by fans of the original Pony Car. It gained some suspension and steering improvements over the earlier cars, yet retained their classic, some-might-say faultless styling. Icons become icons for a reason, and the Mustang’s jaw-dropping looks are all the proof you’ll ever need.
This one definitely looks the part – a two-door coupe, it’s finished in one of the rarest (and in our view, achingly coolest) colours of the lot – Emberglow Metallic, with twin white racing stripes and a brand-new set of Cragar Custom alloy wheels. It’s an epic-looking thing, imported into the UK in 2017 and in the care of its current owner – a muscle car enthusiast – for the past two years.
He’s carried out a few reversible modifications to the car, but nothing extreme or distasteful, and all completely in period. He’s kept all the standard bits if you wanted to put it back to how it was, but in all honesty it exhibits sub-zero levels of coolness exactly as it is. We wouldn’t change a single thing.
If that’s not enough to suck you in, then how about the fact that its 289ci (4,735cc) engine was refurbished in 2018, and produces all the right soul-stirring V8 noises. Oh, and it’s a manual, too, so you can extract as much of that V8 urgency or noisiness as you wish. What’s not to like?

Summary
If you want to get behind the wheel of one of the all-time performance icons, then Mustangs don’t get much better than this one. It’s one of the most sought-after model years and is a wonderful colour, complete with desirable Pony interior, tastefully and subtly modified and easily reversible back to standard should you so wish.
But above all that, it’s one of the coolest cars you’re ever likely to own. Of that, there is no argument. Life is for living – so take the opportunity while it’s there and tick the ultimate early Mustang off your bucket list…
