Overview
Let’s face it, there are few car brands in the world quite as evocative or as appealing to enthusiasts as Alfa Romeo. A brand steeped in racing history, and which has always defined the very notion of buying a car with your heart over your head.
There have been moments of rationality in among the brand’s rich history, with the 156, 159 and Giulia being examples in recent history where you could justifiably buy an Alfa with an element of sensibility thrown in. Decent, stylish compact executive cars that did all the things that fleet managers demand from a car, but at the same time still managed to stir the soul.
But we’re not talking about a JTD diesel here. As cool as it may look in the company car park, a fleet-focused Giulia is still something of a compromise, even if it is a joyously pretty one. A Quadrafogilio, on the other hand…
But wait. This isn’t just ‘any old’ Quadrafogilio (okay, so none of them are, but hear us out here). This is a 2020 Alfa Romeo Racing Edition. One of just 10 (yes, 10) cars produced in RHD, just for the UK market as far as we can see, and introduced with a healthy dose of fanfare at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Costing a cool £89,500 before you even touched the options list, they were a wise investment for those lucky enough to get their hands on one, with a LHD example fetching over €120,000 at auction earlier this year.
But there was plenty to enjoy as an owner: the Racing Edition was developed with Sauber and came with Alfa’s highly acclaimed 2.9-litre V6 BiTurbo petrol engine. Tuned to deliver 520bhp and 600Nm of torque, it gave the Giulia Quadrifoglio a top speed of 191mph and acceleration from zero to 62mph in 3.9 seconds. The choices of titanium for the exhaust pipe, carbo-ceramics for the brakes and carbon shells for the seats shaved off a significant amount of weight compared to the standard versions, adding up to a saving of around 28kg.
What marked it out above anything else, though, was its Aero Enhancement package, developed by Sauber F1 engineers, with wider side skirts, a unique front splitter, more prominent spoiler and side winglets on the front wings, along with a looney tunes Akrapovič titanium exhaust to amplify the V6’s already sonorous soundtrack.
As well as a 10bhp power boost over the standard models, the Racing Edition came with a livery that mimicked the look of the Alfa Romeo Racing F1 cars, with Trofeo White and Competizione Red two-tone paint, an exposed carbon fibre roof, Dark Graphite 19-inch alloy wheels, carbon ceramic brakes with red brake callipers and carbon fibre details on the wing mirrors.
Inside the racing inspiration continued with Sparco racing seats with red stitching and a carbon shell structure, complemented by red seat belts, a Mopar automatic gear selector with carbon insert and leather and Alcantara steering wheel, also with carbon inserts.
It’s a special thing. Very special. Just 10 UK-spec cars exist and this is one of them – your chance to join a pretty exclusive club.

Summary
What we have here, then, is an Alfa Romeo that defines the very lifeblood of the brand. A car built by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts. One that really stirs the senses both as a technological tour de force as much as something to simply look at and admire.
With fewer than 3,400 miles on the clock it’s barely run-in, yet keeping it that way will be difficult. A life in the Channel Islands has kept its mileage down, but if you bring it to the mainland it’ll be impossible not to feel the allure of driving it. Trust us on that. It’s a supercar in a saloon car body and it has the provenance to go with it.
Very rarely does a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity come along, yet here is one. If you can afford it, how can you possibly resist?
