Overview

Some cars are all about their heart – the engine. And that’s very true of this Maserati GranCabrio. Why? Because the F136 Ferrari-Maserati V8 lurking under the bonnet of this GranCabrio is, in anyone’s book, an absolute gem. It’s so damn wonderful that classing it as an engine – merely a means of motivating a car – is dumbing things down.

Sure, it moves you along, and very well indeed, too – this being the later 4.7-litre V8 with 440hp and 361 lb ft of torque. But a F136 V8 with the cross-plane crank arrangement should really be thought of as a musical instrument. It sounds sonorous from idle all the way to its spine-shimmering 7,500rpm red line.

That’s not to say this GranCabrio is a one-trick pony. Not in the least. What we have here is a car wearing Pininfarina badges, and those alone denote it’s going to be a looker. Pininfarina is arguably the greatest of all the famous and iconic Italian design houses and rarely produces an aesthetic dud.

The GranCabrio is definitely one of its hits, with a simple, yet sexy and curvaceous, core design, finished off by some lovely, subtle details. Details that include the big front grille, which implies the ability to Hoover up Tarmac, while those classic vents on its front flanks emulate designs that appeared on the sensational ‘60s Ghibli and 3500 GT.

So it has the classic looks and the engine, but is that all? Not on your nelly. The GranCabrio was Maserati’s first four-seater convertible, which means it’s also practical for someone looking to enjoy their toy with the family, rather than all on their lonesome. And being a convertible with a power roof means open-air motoring whenever the weather permits, but you can carry on enjoying it even if the weather is a bit too British.

It’s not a super-light sports car, true, which puts it more in the mould of a long-distance drop-top GT. But at the same time, get the GranCabrio on a wide and twisting A road, and there’s poise and precision to be enjoyed in the way it handles as well.

This car appears to have been very well cared for, too. Not only is it cosmetically good, both inside and out, but it has a great service history, too – mostly from Maserati main agents. And with relatively low mileage, there should be lots more enjoyment coming to the lucky bidder at the end of this auction.

  • While the interior shows really well there is some light wear and tear, including on the rear corners of the centre console, driver’s seat bolster, driver’s door handle and discolouration to the gearshift paddle
  • The luggage compartment looks extremely clean and tidy

Exterior

  • Those iconic Pininfarina badges on each front wing denote a car designed by one of the all-time great Italian design houses
  • This GranCabrio looks fantastic with its exterior showing in great condition overall – the stunning Nero Carbonio metallic paint retaining its wonderful, deep lustre
  • Other than the usual stone chips, plus a light scratch and parking ding on the nearside door, there’s no serious bodywork damage to report
  • The 20-inch 15-spoke ‘trident design’ Grigio Nuvolari alloys look free of any major kerb damage – bar some light scuffing to the offside rear
  • A recent set of replacement Maserati centre caps are fitted
  • There’s no serious fading to the black canvas roof, which looks very tidy other than a small section of wear (see pics) just above the driver’s side window
  • From the pictures, the light lenses, including the headlamps, have little evidence of UV damage and are free from cracks
  • Brand new windscreen fitted July 2024 – courtesy of an errant stone on the M25

  • New handbrake shoes fitted Feb 2024
  • New front and rear lambda sensors fitted March 2024
  • The owner tells us that the car starts and runs as it should and sounds ‘amazing’
  • Under the bonnet this GranCabrio looks clean and tidy bar some flaking of the red crackle-finish on the nearside rocker cover
  • No reports of any issues underneath the car
  • With the car reported to be in tip-top mechanical condition, it’s ready to go and make the best of the remaining summer weather

Summary

There’s never a bad time to invest in a stunning Maserati, but with the best of the summer weather to come (hopefully), now is surely the optimum time to bag one of the best-looking Maseratis of the modern era.

You need to invest in a good ’un, though, and by every measure, this GranCabrio appears to be just that. It’s in great overall condition inside and out, but, perhaps even more importantly, it comes with a superb service history. That details regular servicing (mostly at Maserati dealers) but also recent maintenance work that demonstrates it’s not been run on a shoestring – always good news.
