Overview

Volkswagen and camper vans are intrinsically linked – the original Westfalia Motor Caravan being the foremost and most iconic of the breed.

Almost 70 years later, the German brand is still at the forefront of the camper van world, with its own in-house models and a raft of aftermarket converters thriving on the back of a reputation that has been dutifully earned through popular culture.

As such, Volkswagen Campers command a premium – be them factory originals or properly engineered conversions, and this one is very much the latter, converted by Autohaus in 2020 when the van was brand new. It’s based on the T6.1 Transporter, which is the facelifted variant of the original T6 and a legend in itself, as it’s set to be the last Transporter model entirely developed by Volkswagen. Its successor has the DNA of a (whisper it…) Ford Transit, so if you want an iconic variant of the last true Transporter then here it is, stacked to the rafters with everything - including the kitchen sink.

The vendor ordered the van new through Autohaus in Minehead in June 2020, based on the T6.1 Highline, which is the plush model, and powered by a 2.0-litre TDI engine equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.

The Highline spec includes useful things for camper van owners, such as LED headlights, a reversing camera and parking sensors front and back, as well as a premium infotainment system that pairs with your smartphone. It’s a fabulous van to drive, making it a much more usable home-from-home than a cute and cuddly but often crusty and cumbersome T2. Indeed, the owner has been using the van as their daily driver when they’ve not been out adventuring and is only now selling it because they managed to up sticks and move to the very place they always went exploring in the van.

Finished in striking and unusual Copper Bronze, the van has a number of enhancements including suspension tweaks fitted by Turner Race Developments, 18-inch Wolfrace alloys and a VW California front undertray to improve refinement.

Summary
