Overview
During its development, the Porsche Macan was known within Porsche as Project Cajun, the name being an abruption of Cayenne Junior. Its purpose, then, was pretty obvious – to take the basis of what had become the fastest-selling and most profitable Porsche model ever and repackage it into a smaller and more affordable format, and one that would inevitably bring more new faces into the Porsche fold.
It may have taken purists a while to accept a Porsche SUV as true to the brand, but when the Macan made its debut, it made business look slow for the proverbial hot cake seller. There was a long waiting list, and the car was showered with accolades – in South Africa, it even won the coveted Car of the Year award.
Naturally, to launch the car, Porsche went all-out to ensure the media got to drive the very best examples in the range. This is one of them – an original Porsche press car, in Macan S specification and with a specification list that leaves little unticked. As well as its punchy 340bhp twin-turbo V6, it has Porsche ‘PASM’ adaptive suspension and dampers, 18-way adaptive sports seats, 20-inch DesignSport alloys and carbon side blades to give it visual impact.
It also has a full Porsche Main Dealer service history, as well as a selection of magazines and news articles in which it was featured, including the covers of both Top Gear and EVO. Such pedigree is rare and adds further to the appeal of what’s already a desirable, high-performance Porsche SUV. If you want to add a cover star to your own collection, such opportunities don’t come around very often. If a Macan is ever to become a collector’s item, it’s this one…

Summary
Quite apart from this being a really enticing example of the Macan, and in one of the model’s best specifications, it’s also a car with a fascinating history – one that’s bound to raise the eyebrows of Porsche collectors.
Added to that the facts that it’s impressively fast and agile and, by dint of its press car history, about as well-equipped as you could dare imagine a Macan to be, and you have a slick, stylish and sporty SUV that’s much more interesting than a nearly new Qashai. A family car, sports car and future collector’s item all in one – there aren’t many cars that can stake a claim quite like that one.
