Overview

By 2012 the E92 M3 was preparing to bow out to to a round of rapturous applause and, to give the model a proper send off, BMW treated us to the Edition 500, limited, as the name suggests, to just 500 cars, making this a rare machine.Buyers got £4,000-worth of extras with their new M3 and could pick from Santorini Blue, Imola Red or as here, Mineral White, and all came with menacing glossy black 19” alloys, while inside there was bespoke Novillo leather with red contrast stitching and piano black trim featuring a laser cut “one of 500” on the dash to show the car’s pedigree.

Under the bonnet we still got the sonorous 4-litre, 420hp normally aspirated V8, but why mess with perfection, and that’s attached to the 7 speed M-DCT gearbox, which delivers fast changes and adds to the fun with throttle blips on the downshift.

This car has had just two owners from new, the first keeping it until 2016, and neither using it heavily, as the mileage is a low 30,000 and the condition reflects this. The white paint is virtually unmarked and the black wheels scuff free. It’s a pleasing and subtle yet aggressive colour combination, and the interior is as good as you’d expect with the only sign of wear on the driver’s seat bolster.

You know a BMW has been enthusiast owned when there are service receipts from Munich Legends in the file, and it’s a thick file, with a thick wad of receipts and when it was new the owner even kept the fancy white welcome box from BMW. In all, then, it’s a well maintained limited edition example of one of BMW’s greatest hits that’s in great condition - there’s a lot to love.

Summary

The E92 stands alone as the sole M3 to receive a V8 engine, with the brand returning to six cylinders (albeit turbocharged) thereafter and the V8 is a cracker. As a swansong to this iteration of the M3, this rare limited edition is even more desirable and collectable.

It’s an excellent low mileage example and looks crisp and sharp in its monochrome colour scheme, its pristine appearance almost but not quite hiding the monster within.
