Overview

The Porsche Cayman is one of the all-time great ideas. Building upon generations of desirability and world class dynamics, it elbowed its way into the model range by fusing together all the really good bits from the 911 and the Boxster to form something new and endlessly enticing.

Indeed, this was far more than just a Boxster with a fixed roof; acting as a riposte to all those sneering cynics who like to chastise the 911 for having the engine in the ‘wrong’ place (the Cayman, of course, opting to mount it in the middle), it offered sleek fastback thrills with scintillating playfulness and surprisingly versatile practicality. With a boot at each end and all manner of cubbyholes, this is a car that could happily spend the morning lapping your local circuit with aplomb, show you a good time on the country roads home, swish you to the supermarket for the weekly shop, then trudge through the commuter gridlock the next morning. It can do it all, and do it well.

This particular example is especially alluring, being the sought-after genesis-spec S. The Cayman was launched in 2005 for the 2006 model year so this one is just about as purist-friendly as you can get – and in the more powerful Cayman S spec you get a 3.4-litre flat-six offering a meaty 291bhp, plus a slick 6-speed manual transaxle. Proper Porsche engine, proper gearbox. Furthermore, this car has covered a mere 48,000 miles from new, with a full history to back it up, and has always been enthusiast-owned – there’s even a copy of the Porsche Club GB magazine in the history file featuring this very Cayman. A sublime spec, and positively straining at the leash to be enjoyed.

Summary

The term ‘modern classic’ gets thrown around a lot, but it’s eminently appropriate here. The original Cayman shape has aged so well that the average passer-by would likely never guess that this is an 18-year-old car. The condition certainly doesn’t give that fact away either, it’s clearly a car that’s been well looked after throughout its life, and it feels remarkably fresh today. The right spec, a reassuring history, this Cayman S makes a very strong case for itself – so bid early and bid well, as we’re anticipating a lot of interest in this fabulous Porsche.
