Overview
Fast three-door Vauxhalls have long been appreciated by the discerning British motoring public. The tried-and-tested formula of putting a powerful four-cylinder engine in a compact shell is well known and has proved a sales success for decades. So with the introduction of this generation of Corsa, Vauxhall knew customers would expect to see a performance model: enter the VXR.
The turbocharged 1.6-litre engine fitted to the VXR produces an impressive 202 bhp. And Vauxhall’s engineers even allow you five seconds of overboost to bring the maximum torque figure up to 207 lb ft, perfect for those fast overtakes. A six-speed ‘box and aluminium pedal covers means you’ll be enjoying the downshift as you head towards your favourite local S-bend.
And the interior of the VXR manages a good balance of both comfort and styling. The Recaro bucket seats provide excellent support, and feature full leather upholstery with contrasting stitching. Then when you need to do boring everyday things like carrying passengers or stuff, there’s enough room for three humans on the back seat. Or with the seats folded you can carry up to 1,090 litres of anything you want. With perhaps the exception of lead: 1,090 litres of lead would by our calculations weigh about 12,360 kg, which would certainly affect the handling.
So if you’re looking for a nippy little hatchback which can also perform normal load-carrying activities, then this Corsa VXR has a lot to offer. It’s very tidy throughout and has clearly been well treated by its previous owners, the interior is a very pleasant place to be whether you’re tackling the morning commute, or seeing what 202 bhp of turbocharged engine can do when poked.
