Overview

Not every classic Defender spends its time plugging its way over windswept moors or blazing deserts. Some lead rather more sedate lives in the city or the suburbs, which means they can remain shiny and bright like this particular Defender, styled by Urban. That’s not to say it’s not just as capable as any other Defender off the tarmac, rather that it is at home both on the cobbled streets of your local swanky neighbourhood, and in the nearby fields and country lanes. 

It has a stylish interior, which features things like ‘design’ and ‘comfort’ — words we don’t usually associate with old Defenders. The dashboard is a cut above the rest, and even the rear load area features carpets. So if you’re likely to need to carry a sheep or two in the back, you’re probably not this car’s target audience. Unless you like to make sure your Herdwicks travel in style with three-point seatbelts and tinted windows. We don’t judge. 

The car comes with a sizable collection of invoices, detailing its servicing over the years. It has a reassuringly long MOT, and a good number of stamps in the service record. Of course, like any Defender, there will be ongoing maintenance, but here you have the reassurance of a reconditioned cylinder head, and plenty more besides. Which is nice to know when the ECU has been remapped to put out 160 bhp. 

So if you’re looking for a ‘go anywhere’ vehicle, but don’t want to compromise on style, then this Defender by Urban is a great way to cover all the bases.

Interior

• Having recently been subject to a deep clean and detail, the interior of this Defender is looking superb

• It’s certainly not ‘agricultural’ with its sleek, stylish dashboard finished in Keswick Green, and polished aluminium gear levers — fitted in 2016 by Nene Overland

• Half-leather upholstery in very good condition, with a small stain on the driver’s seat inner bolster

• The seats are heated and manually adjustable

• There are very few signs of wear throughout

• Green leather-trimmed steering wheel and dashboard top 

• Black carpets retain a good pile

• Urban fitted front footwell mats

• Door cards very clean and tidy, with no scuffs or cracks that we could see 

• Pioneer touchscreen audio system with DAB radio in the centre of the dashboard

Exterior

• The Urban styling on the exterior gives this classic Defender a thoroughly modern look

• From the ‘URBAN’ badge on the bonnet, to the spare wheel cover on the tailgate, the car is superbly well presented throughout 

• The vendor reports that they have replaced the wing mirrors and many of the front trim pieces with new, so it looks very smart

• They have also had a few areas of body work seen to, including the front windscreen surround, and a dent on the offside

• The roof has also reportedly been re-painted 

• The body panels all remain in very good condition, with no significant damage that we could see

• There is a little bubbling to the painted chequer-plate trim 

• Keswick Green paintwork suits this Defender very well, and remains very good 

• 18-inch black alloy wheels

• No kerb damage or scratches that we could see

• BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tyres 

• Rear-mounted spare wheel

• The seller tells us that the wheels have been refurbished and the tyres are ‘like new’

• URBAN front bumper with lights fitted 

• The headlights look clear and bright 

• There is an MOT advisory for a chipped windscreen but the seller advises that it has been replaced with a new heated screen

• Like most Defenders, there is some corrosion on the underside

Mechanical

• 2,918 cc diesel engine 

• Remapped to produce 160 bhp 

• Six-speed manual gearbox

• Selectable four-wheel drive

• Low-range and differential locks

• Engine bay clean

• Front sump guard fitted 

• In Mar 2020 the intercooler was replaced

• In Dec 2024 both rear shock absorbers were replaced and the track rod bar was replaced

• In May 2023 the car received a full service including engine oil, air, oil, and fuel filters, and engine tune

• In Oct 2023 the cylinder head was reconditioned, and the timing chain, EGR valve, and EGR cooler were replaced at a cost of £1,200

• Current MOT advisories include a slight oil leak, corroded brake pipes, central brake light not working, and a damaged track rod end dust cover

• No other mechanical issues reported 

Summary

Smart, sophisticated, and extremely capable. This Defender is like an SAS officer in a suit. Truly the car for all occasions.
