Overview

Way back in the mists of time, when the first iteration of the MX-5 burst onto the scene in 1989, it was both a revolution and a continuation. The small two-seater roadster took on the job of proving that the world still wanted a proper sports car for the masses. And it certainly delivered, with over a million MX-5s having been sold, and production continuing even after 35 years.

By the time the third generation model was introduced in 2005, the MX-5 had become a respected part of the automotive landscape. It was comfortable enough in its own skin for the designers to push the boundary of what would be acceptable as a basic sports car, being bigger, heavier, and better equipped than its predecessors.

This departure from the formula caused something of a stir in the press at the time, with soothsayers foreseeing the coming apocalypse. But in truth, looking at it with our sensible and learned 2025 pants on, this generation of MX-5 really is a car you could live with. Moan as the journalists might about all the additional features, you might actually appreciate things like air conditioning on a hot day, and heated seats on a frosty morning.

And the MX-5 we see here is made even more appealing by performance upgrades from BBR. After these were professionally fitted, the car was taken for dyno testing and found to produce over 200bhp, a considerable improvement on the 158 horses it came with from the factory. Other upgrades include stiffening struts, shock absorbers and road springs, and a complete exhaust system.

All this means that you can enjoy an extremely powerful example of this small two-seater, which remains naturally aspirated. And given that the car looks pretty much standard from the outside, you’ll have the satisfaction of surprising unsuspecting onlookers whenever you put your foot down.

Summary

Not your average 15-year-old MX-5: this extensively upgraded example brings a whole new level of performance to the world of small two-seater sports cars. Some people go mad with their performance mods with cars like this, but this looks like a very well chosen set of performance improvements. And from the outside you can barely even. Marvellous.
