Overview

As far as two-seater sports cars go the BMW Z4 M ticks a lot, if not all, the boxes that can possibly be ticked. Grabbing the torch set ablaze by the previous Z3 M, a car so wonderfully fettled by those boffins in BMW's Motorsport division, the Z4 M would continue to light the way for charismatic and exhilarating pocket rockets.

Sold alongside the roofless roadster, both cars share BMW's legendary S54 straight-six engine. Yep, that's the same one from the E46 M3, which means 343bhp and 269lb ft of torque, all making its way to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Bliss. It also allows the Z4 M to accelerate to 60mph from parked in around five seconds. Like we said, exhilarating.

Looking just as muscular as its predecessor, subtly hinting at the rather impressive power contained within, the Z4 M is a handsome car, in a rugged, unconventional way, and it never fails to appear perpetually prepared to wreak havoc. Sport mode and traction control can be turned on and off respectively - for those that enjoy a bit of extra excitement - with said Sport mode tightening everything up and eliciting more response from the already hugely capable six-pot.

This particular low mileage example is a bit of a peach having been kept in an air chamber and driven only 3,000 miles by the current owner, clearly reflected (quite literally) in the condition of the paintwork which the vendor describes as “like glass”. The car presents beautifully, from the wing mirrors to the wheels – it truly is a wonderful specimen.

The vendor tells us that the interior is “like new” and still even smells like a new car, testament to its limited use, having covered less than 22,000 miles since rolling out of the factory. The cream leather electric memory seats are in excellent condition and even high traffic areas like the steering wheel and gear knob are free from deterioration.

Sounding a little fruitier currently, thanks to a non-standard exhaust (the original parts are included in the sale), the car is said to drive impeccably with zero advisories on any MOT except the very first one for incorrect number plate spacing - a rather innocuous infraction we're sure you'll agree.

Summary

The Z4 M may not be as refined as some of its rivals but we reckon that brutishness is one of its stronger suits. This is analogue driving in a modern age and the car's natural dynamism hasn't been fettered by unnecessary driver aids, allowing it to remain utterly engaging to those who appreciate the basic act of driving.

With just 4,275 M Coupés built (a large chunk of which got shipped off to the States) there is a great deal of exclusivity to be enjoyed here, too, along with the sheer, unadulterated glee of owning such a brawny and exciting collection of parts in really rather remarkable condition.
