Overview

There are two things that make a genuine race car unlike anything on the road. The first of these is extreme lightness. We’re not talking “take the spare wheel out of the boot” lightness. We’re not even talking “plastic instead of glass for the windows lightness”. No, we’re talking about “not actually fitting any windows, or doors, or seat padding for that matter”. That’s race car lightness.

The second thing you need is revs. No, not a clutch of be-collared bloke with a penchant for coffee mornings. What you want is an engine that really gets going at the point where a road-going powerplant is running out of puff. Something that wails and howls like a demented banshee, begging you to hang on to each gear for a few extra milliseconds each lap.

As luck would have it, we have exactly the right sort of vehicle right here, just in time for the new track day season. It’s almost like we plan this or something.

Westfield have long been purveyors of excellent Caterham-style enthusiast and track day specials. From high-revving, lightweight apex-botherers to brutal V8 engined muscle cars, there’s something in their oeuvre for every kind of petrolhead.

This particular example is a Megablade, ‘Mega’ because, well look at it; and ‘Blade’ because the beating heart of this fine little racer is the 919cc SC33 engine from a third-gen Honda CBR900RR (also known as a ‘Fireblade’). That diddy little one-litre pushes out a frankly unhinged 130bhp and redlines at a ludicrous 10,500rpm. Which is a lot. That little four-cylinder also helps the car keep light enough to make a 90s supermodel look chunky (c.500Kg). The results are a tremendously low centre of gravity and the kind of handling that could best be described as “like a jet-powered, telepathic cheetah”.

It also sounds like a horde of steroidally enhanced hornets and is about as angry. It’s a bit silly, superb on track, immensely capable in the right hands and completely and utterly wonderful.

Do you want a track car (which you can also use on the road)? Yes, of course you do. So buy this, take it to a few track days and make people in obscenely expensive exotica look very, very silly indeed…

Summary

You’d have to be mad – completely, totally and irredeemably barking – to have a Megablade as your daily. However, as a weekend car, or something reserved for track days and shows, there’s little else as satisfying to drive, or that’s as close to a proper race car.

The dainty dimensions, incredibly light weight and potent motorcycle-derived power give this a presence, feel and agility that’s pretty much unmatched in the motoring world.

Presented in great condition with a perfect specification for track day use, we think this rev-hungry little sports car is absolutely brilliant. If you’re looking for maximum smiles-per-mile, then look no further.
