Overview

The cult of the fast estate is something that has long been incredibly popular in the performance motoring scene, and it’s easy to see why: stealth plays a huge part, with these cars looking for all the world like sensible grocery-getting station wagons (unless you know what you’re looking for). You get all the comfort and practicality of a big family car, you can shift a fridge or take the hedge-clippings to the tip… but show it a track and all hell breaks loose.

We can probably blame Rickard Rydell and his BTCC Volvo 850 estate for all this, but it’s fair to say that Audi are the modern-era masters of the genre – and sitting front-and-centre of all this is the venerable RS4. Now, there’s a little nomenclature to unpick here: the car we have here is a B8 RS4, meaning it’s the third generation. The first-gen (B5) had a twin-turbo 2.7 V6, and the fourth-gen (B9) also came with a V6, this time a 2.9.

Sandwiched in between these six-bangers came a couple of rorty nat-asp V8 models: the second-gen (B7) had a 4.2 FSI V8, and this was carried over in revised form into the B8. All of which means that the car you see before you, looking like it’s ready to trundle off to Ikea, boasts an astonishing 444bhp, the slick 7-speed dual-clutch S-Tronic gearbox allowing it to scamper from 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds.

This RS4 was furnished with the tasty and desirable Sports Pack option from the factory, which added the larger and more imposing 20” wheels, the freer-flowing Sports exhaust with the black tips, and the Dynamic Ride Control suspension. The latter has recently received some quite expensive attention too, the owning having paid almost £6000 this year to replace the front and rear shock absorbers, ARB links and Dynamic Ride Control pipes. As such, it’s a fabulous thing to drive, and very much ready for the next owner to enjoy to the fullest.

Summary

The appeal of the RS4 really speaks for itself. A true polymath, it’s a car that can do a lot of things but it’s no Jack-of-all-trades – everything it does, it does extremely well. It’s a ridiculously fast performance car with astonishing handling and devastating brakes. It’s also a comfortable cruiser that’s lavishly equipped and supremely cosseting. It’s got all the practicality you could ever need in terms of shifting furniture or clearing garden waste, and there’s oodles of room for family holidays and adventures.

But, crucially, that last sentence exists only in potential form, as that’s clearly not what this RS4 has been used for. There’s no evidence of sticky fingers and spilled drinks in the back, no scuffs or debris in the boot, it’s all impressively clean. A desirably specced and equipped example that’s obviously been looked after, with decent history (and, of course, all of that work done to the suspension this year), so it’s ready to do whatever you need it to do. Whether you want a car to be a comfy daily driver, a family runabout, a track toy, a workhorse, or even sit within a polished and pampered collection, this impressive Audi can do all of that.
