Overview
People with too much time on their hands are forever putting V8 engines into small cars: prime examples being MX-5s, MGBs, and Morris Minors. Of course we at PH headquarters very much approve of this as a pastime, and would probably be trying to fit a V8 engine into the office coffee machine if we had slightly longer lunch breaks.
But there is a simpler way. SLK55 owners have known for some time that you don’t need a degree in mechanical engineering and a well-equipped home workshop in order to get yourself a small car with a big V8 in it. Instead, you can save yourself a great deal of bother and oily fingers by buying one ready made — or in this case, stay in and bid on one. This is because the good folk at Affalterbach understand that there are people who love V8 engines more than oxygen, so they created the SLK55 AMG.
At its heart lies a naturally aspirated V8, which produces 415 bhp. Its all-aluminium construction means it’s very light for its size. And the clever ability to run on only four cylinders makes it astonishingly efficient.
But don’t just take our word for it. The vendor tells us that they will miss having this SLK parked on their driveway, ready to brighten up any mundane journey. ‘The SLK55 handles competently and securely, only really kicking the tail out if provoked. On short trips and longer drives, for me, it has struck a great balance between entertaining sports car but also a really competent, comfortable car for covering distances.’

Summary
AMG badges tell us that this is no ordinary Mercedes-Benz. It is a very desirable motorcar, finished in an attractive shade of blue with a well-appointed interior. And with its V8 engine already fitted, you don’t have to think twice or indeed get the spanners out before jumping in and listening to that fabulous exhaust note.
