Overview

The Italian company Piaggio has claimed the world of buzzing insects for their model names — the ‘Ape’ meaning bee, and the famous ‘Vespa’ scooter being a wasp. But there is another company associated with high-revving engines which buzz along happily to a redline which would make other engineers weep, or more likely explode.

If Honda were an Italian company they’d probably follow suit and name their high-revving engine the ‘Zanzara’, meaning mosquito. But instead they are Japanese, so what they lack in the naming department they make up for in the engineering and production standards departments. So their two-seater sports car doesn’t come with a flamboyant name, instead the S2000 with a VTEC engine sounds more like a fax machine.

But you don’t buy a Japanese sportscar for the name do you. You buy it for those far more important other characteristics: philosophical ways of designing with soothing and reassuring names like ‘kaizen’, ‘ikigai’ and ‘kansei’. We don’t claim to fully understand what they mean, but we are aware of ideas of continuous improvement and other such noble causes.

So with the S2000 having been produced from 1999 to 2009, it sounds like a good idea to capitalise on this ‘continuous improvement’ and look out for one that comes late in the production numbers. And this 2008 car fits that bill rather nicely. Honda introduced chassis and suspension improvements in 2003, and other changes were made along the way.

This particular car has been with its present owner since March 2009, and comes with a hefty stack of paperwork detailing the mechanical servicing undertaken during that time. It also benefits from replacement soft top roof fabric, which matches the blue leather seats and excellent metallic blue paint. So it looks as good as it sounds while you’re revving it to its impossibly high redline.

Summary

This S2000 benefits from long-term ownership, during which it appears to have been very well cared for. Its paint sparkles in the light and the interior looks almost spotless, which coupled with the extensive servicing invoices makes this Honda one we’d happily put in our own garage if we could.
