Overview
These days everything has a turbocharger, unless it’s electric, but there was a time when ‘turbo’ was a word of the future. It was at the cutting edge. Having a TURBO meant you were going places fast. Admittedly, some of those places were hedgerows next to quiet B-roads, but you get the point. And Porsche was perhaps the brand most fervently waving the flag for the cause of forced induction powered by waste exhaust gasses.
But the 997 Turbo we see here hails from a later time, a time when stockbrokers had had enough of extracting themselves from roadside hawthorn bushes. The 997 is an altogether more refined machine, with excellent handling characteristics and styling which has aged very well. It’s the kind of car you can drive on today’s roads and people will be surprised to hear that it was built way back in 2006.
But this is a good thing, because although the ‘noughties’ now have a reputation as a time of financial armageddon, they were also the sweet spot of automotive progress. Mechanical excellence was still coupled with an uncluttered driving experience. Swanky touch screens were still the stuff of James Bond films.
Previously registered over the Irish sea in Dublin, this 997 came to the UK in 2017. It has had the benefit of hefty servicing in recent years, and comes with a long MOT. So you can enjoy the best of the Turbo’s 467 bhp and — if you’re feeling brave — its top speed of 193 mph.
