Overview
While the original water-cooled Porsches were met with a lukewarm reception when they made their debut back in 1976, in the form of the 924, they went on to become the brand’s volume sellers in the 1980s, spurred on by the introduction of the somewhat beefier and undeniably handsome 944.
They were great to drive, too, especially with the wider track and body of the 944, coupled to a transaxle arrangement that, in moving the gearbox to the back axle, gave them superb weight distribution.
But it was the final iteration of the ‘transaxle’ Porsches that was generally regarded as the best. The 968 came along in 1991 and brought with it styling cues from the V8-powered 928, namely two oval retractable headlights and a longer, more purposeful nose. It was a handsome car, but it was also much sharper to drive, too, with a new six-speed transmission and variable valve timing.
This one is a 968 Sport, not to be mistaken with the stripped out, ultra-lightweight Club Sport, yet at the same time closely related. For the UK market, we got 179 Club Sports and 306 Sports, the irony being that every Sport started life as a ‘Club Sport’ model on the Zuffenhausen production line.
Each of the 306 examples imported by Porsche Cars GB was a Club Sport model with ‘Luxury Pack’ items added back in, including an electric tailgate release, electric windows, electrically adjustable comfort seats, and a rear bench – as seen on this car, which also features an optional electric sunroof.
This one also sits on stunning 17-inch Cup 2 alloy wheels, sporting Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres.
The factory specification includes pop-up headlights, a heated rear windscreen, a three-spoke Club Sport steering wheel, electrically adjustable door mirrors, a digital clock with stopwatch, and electric windows. It was bought new in 1994 and then had a long-term, mature lady owner for a long time, who took it to a Porsche main dealer for each of its first nine annual services. The service book has 23 service stamps in total, with 14 stamps in the past 30,000 miles from independent specialists. Timing belt changes are recorded June 2010 @129,600 miles, April 2018 @143,927 miles, January 2020 @ 144,500 miles approx, May 2021 @145,214 miles.
Finished in rare and stunning Iris Blue, it’s a well-loved and beautifully presented example of the 968 Sport, ready to be appreciated by a very lucky new owner. In addition, its most recent major service was carried out in June 2022 at 148,480 miles by Porsche specialist Jasmine Porschalink UK, which included an engine oil, oil filter, spark plug and air filter change – less than 700 miles ago – while the gearbox was stripped and rebuilt, with a new Dual Mass flywheel fitted in August 2021.
It's a rare Porsche that’s also one of the finest-handling and most exciting of the brand’s models to drive, once cited by former Porsche works rally driver Walter Röhrl as the best Porsche ever to drive. Amongst a sea of 911s and even the 959, which Röhrl helped to develop, that’s no faint praise.

Summary
While collectors go potty for the 968 Club Sport models, this one could well be the educated choice – it’s essentially a Club Sport, but with all of the bits that make the iconic performance model less comfortable and unsuited to daily use having been put back in place. You’d only really notice the difference if you drove it at ten-tenths, and there’s not much scope to do that on Britain's roads.
Instead, why not ‘Taste the Difference’ with a bit of added luxury, in what remains one of the finest-handling and most handsome Porsches ever made, as well as a true 1990s icon. We love it and we expect you will too.
