Overview

Fiat and Abarth have a long, bountiful history together, and that working partnership continues well into the 21st century with Abarth taking the adorable Fiat 500 city car and turning it into a true ‘pocket rocket’ complete with racing styling, louder exhaust and improved performance, all whilst retaining the 500’s minuscule footprint and recognisable styling.

The 595 Competizione takes the standard Abarth one step further, adding a valved Record Monza exhaust as standard, power upgrade to 180bhp, bigger brakes and more. The 70th anniversary model builds on this, with model-specific trims, Sabelt racing seats, and improved interior design with plenty of carbon trim.

This particular car - whilst a 70th anniversary model - does not have the standard exhaust, instead the owner has opted to fit a full Magneti Marelli item including a decat, whilst the standard air intake has been upgraded, along with fitment of a blow-off valve for the turbocharger to turn this dynamic little hatchback into a full assault on the senses. Note that there is no replacement cat provided and so a suitable alternative will need to be found to secure an MOT.

Not limited to fettling under the bonnet, the cabin has had its standard seats removed in favour of a brace of Sabelt Racer Duo seats up front, whilst in the rear the seats have been removed and a strut brace / luggage net combination has been fitted. Underneath, a set of Bilstein Blue coilovers have been fitted to both improve stance and add adjustability to the suspension setup, and the stock wheels have been replaced with a set of lightweight ATS alloys, which we think look fantastic.

In the care of the current owner since 2023, this little Abarth would make for an excellent track toy, and will turn plenty of heads wherever it goes.

Interior

• Interior presents fantastically overall, with numerous upgrades to give a more driver-focused appearance to the cabin
• Sabelt Racer Duo bucket seats
• Rear seat delete
• Strut brace and luggage net fitted in the rear
• The door cards have a few light scuffs to the lower half of the panels
• We noted some small holes on the outside of the driver’s seat head brace/cushion
• Other than the above, both seats are in very good condition
• There are no reported faults with any of the interior systems or switchgear
• Exterior
• Black metallic paintwork contrasts brilliantly against the bronze ATS wheels for a stylish look
• The paint and bodywork look to be in excellent condition overall, with a few swirl marks visible in the paint in direct sunlight
• Looking closer, there is a large chip/ dent on the bonnet, and a larger scuff on the offside of the front bumper
• The underside of the front bumper is also scuffed, though this is generally considered par-for-the-course on a lowered 595
• The ATS wheels are in excellent condition with no noted kerb rash
• Elsewhere, we noted a tiny scrape on the driver’s door mirror cap
• Team Heko wind deflectors have been fitted
• Overall, a very smart example of the 595 Competizione 70th that would only be further enhanced by a paint correction and attention to the bonnet damage

Mechanical

• 1.4-litre T-Jet turbocharged inline four engine, producing 180bhp in ‘Competizione’ form however with the tuning modifications it's likely a  higher figure now
• Five-speed manual gearbox
• Front wheel drive
• Larger brakes than a standard 595 for improved stopping power as part of the Competizione upgrade
• Induction kit for improved turbo noises, along with an aftermarket blow-off valve
• Magnetti Marelli exhaust system with decat - the original exhaust is not supplied with the car, so will need an alternative to secure an MOT
• Bilstein Blue coilovers
• Incredible sound - these 1.4-litre engines are known for their impressive aural capabilities
• Reported to be in excellent health with no known mechanical issues

Summary

The term ‘pocket rocket’ is often thrown around by motoring journalist types, but in the case of the 595 Competizione, it really is exactly that. Diminutive and with a tiny footprint but with a power-to-weight ratio that’ll allow you to embarrass cars far larger and more expensive, not to mention with an incredible soundtrack (that has further been enhanced on this example) it’s no wonder that these 595s remain popular with enthusiastic drivers.
