Overview

Just like apple pie, blue jeans and prohibitively expensive healthcare the Chevrolet Corvette is about as American as it gets. Debuting in 1953 the Corvette became a stalwart of the muscle car scene of the '60s and '70s and has since gone on to be regarded as one of the greatest sports cars of all time.

Currently on to its eighth generation and still being made today, such is its enduring popularity, it remains a handsome and exciting machine that still produces more than enough thrills (and sometimes spills in the hands of the inexperienced) to satiate most enthusiast's desires.

The Corvette wasn't just a hit on the streets though, far from it. With more motorsport heritage than you can shake a V8 at, the Corvette, beginning with three C1 models at Le Mans in 1960, has enjoyed a lifelong liaison with racing, especially the Indianapolis 500.

This connection with that most famous of competitions reached a new milestone in 2007 when the sixth-generation Corvette C6 was once again selected as pace car for the 92nd running of that legendary race, and to mark the occasion General Motors built 500 limited edition replicas in commemoration. All were finished in striking Atomic Orange Metallic Tintcoat paint with gold ribbon striping and Indy 500 badging and they certainly made a bold statement! Under the “hood” is a 6.0-litre LS2 V8 producing 400 horsepower, which translates to a 0-60mph time of just over 4 seconds and a top speed of 186mph. A fitting tribute then.

This is far more than a beautiful collectors item, however. This C6 not only delivers on performance (it has many performance upgrades over the standard cars) but also comfort and, some would argue more importantly, heritage.
