Overview
It’s rare to find anyone who writes about cars for a living – at least anyone who really knows their stuff – who, when asked what the best sports car in the world is, doesn’t eventually say “the Porsche 911”. There’s a very good reason for that: because that’s what it is.
Sure, there are faster, prettier, more exclusive sports cars out there. Many of them, in fact. But nothing quite matches the 911 for that delightfully Teutonic ability to just get everything right. It’s fast, handles superbly, is built incredibly well, can genuinely be used every day, is surprisingly capable, features a genuinely evocative drivetrain and has heaps of badge cachet. Quite literally, there is no downside. And we’re struggling to think of another sports car we can say that about.
When you consider that the 993 was the fourth generation of the 911, the last of the air-cooled 911s, and that it still offers a fabulous driving experience some 30-odd years after it left the production line, then you start to realise just how special the 911 is. Yes, it’s the go-to answer for a legion of petrolheads and automotive word-wranglers, but it’s the go-to because it’s just so damn fine.
Which brings us neatly, and in a not too circuitous manner, to the handsome 993 you see here. Much to our delight, it’s no trailer queen or poser-mobile. Instead it’s clearly been used as it should be - for driving. This manual Carrera 2 coupe has a fine specification, great service record and long MOT, making it ideal for anyone who wants to sample the delights of ’the best sports car in the world’ this summer.
Look, don’t argue, it just is.

Summary
As a driver’s car, the 993 is legendary. Delicate, well-balanced, powerful without being terrifying, deeply practical, and hearteningly reliable. In fact, it’s precisely the kind of car that simply doesn’t get made any more, and probably never will again. Much to our chagrin.
And with so many 993s falling prey to the ever-increasing popularity of restomodding, to see one that has been kept in factory specification, well-maintained and driven properly really does make our cynical old hearts rejoice.
What else is there to say? This is a solid, well-kept and clean example of the world’s finest sportscar. The sort of machine that brings with it a deep, secure feeling of joy that only comes from knowing you bought the right car.
One day we’ll probably look back on the 911s of the late 90s and early 00s as the pinnacle of driving enjoyment. For now, let’s just enjoy the ride.
