Overview

Blue over blue. It’s very Porsche, isn’t it? By that we mean it shouldn’t work. Like hanging the engine over the rear axle or keeping a car looking pretty much the same for more than 60 years.

And yet, as with so many things, the wizards of Stuttgart are right. Not only does it work, but it’s the kind of specification that makes you wonder why anyone would choose anything else. It’s magnificent.

However, there’s far more to this winsome 997 than a cracking colour scheme. Being a 997, it’s also one of the most rewarding yet sumptuously practical sports cars you can own – perfect as a docile and comfortable daily, but oh so ready to unleash savagery when the road gets twisty and fun. That hearty 3.8-litre flat-six yowls with intent at the merest prod of your right foot, squatting the rear and hurtling the horizon towards you. It’s an addictive moment of drama that never gets old.

This particular example comes with the added bonus of an engine that has recently been rebuilt by marque specialists AMS Porsche, as well as a comprehensive service and maintenance record. As such, it should provide many more years of smooth A-road cruising and blistering B-road attacks.

Putting everything else aside, we’re still drooling over the spec though. There are better colour combinations than Lapis Blue over Ocean Blue. There must be. We just haven’t encountered any of them yet…

Summary

What garage would be complete without a 911? It’s the ultimate all-round sports car, the Swiss Army knife of the car world. That’s not damning with faint praise either – to be a class-leader is so many areas, for a number of decades, requires a focus and determination rarely seen.

Many would say that the 997 is the ultimate expression of the 911 too. Modern comfort and safety, old school naturally aspirated character and soul. Hell of a combination, that.

With a great spec, solid history and recent engine rebuild, there’s much to recommend here. We reckon this would be an incredibly rewarding and satisfying car to own.

Oh yes, and don’t forget that fabulous colour scheme…
