Overview
To the uninitiated, Westfields and Caterhams can appear to be the same car, but to those in the know, and to those who have built their own, there are some significant differences. Yes, they are both hugely engaging, fun to drive two-seater, open top sports cars but the Westfield dances to its own tune and remains a popular choice when it comes to hoonable, competition-proven track weapons or weekend B-Road champions.
Offering both factory-built and kit car versions, the original Westfield company did begin life by producing very similar cars to the Caterham Seven. A little too close as it would turn out, causing Caterham to pursue legal action and after an out of court settlement Westfield would subsequently differentiate its design, a decision that would actually help the company grow and develop, treading its own path when it came to sports car production.
But like the Caterham, there is a huge range of options when it comes to picking a Westfield to suit, with many considering a four-cylinder build to be the sweet spot. And that's exactly what we have here – a 2001 Westfield fitted with a four-pot Ford CVH engine with twin Weber carburettors, a car that's believed to be factory-built.
A popular choice, the CVH motor featured in a plethora of production Fords in the 1980s and early '90s and remains a robust and easy to maintain powerplant. In this instance the engine displaces 1.6-litres and will produce around 100bhp. Now that may not seem like much but when it's powering a car that weighs about as much as a snack-sized chocolate bar there's plenty of fun to be had, trust us.
The car is in wonderful condition overall and is in fine mechanical shape with the vendor telling us that it starts and stops as it should and sounds great to boot.
