Overview

Tradition courses through the veins of Morgan roadsters with a delectable richness. Look at the fruity curvature of those rear arches – the clamp in the factory which forms that curve has been in continuous use since the sixties. And it’s well-known even outside of car enthusiast circles that Morgans are ‘made of wood’. They’re not really, of course – the car you’re looking at here has a galvanised steel ladder chassis with its steel and aluminium bodywork artfully stretched around an ash wood frame. All lovingly hand-crafted by seasoned artisans in Malvern.

This particular model is named the Roadster, something that replaced the Plus 8 in the model range in 2004. This is a 2015 car, with those gracefully butterfly-hinged bonnets hiding a Ford 3.7-litre Cyclone V6 – an engine found elsewhere in the Mustang (and, interestingly, Police Interceptors in the US).

280bhp feels spectacularly effervescent in a car that weighs just 940kg; that’s a comparable power-to-weight ratio to a 997 GT3 RS or an Audi R8 V10, and you can hear every single one of those ponies galloping thanks to the incredible exhaust system that’s recently been fitted. With twin exits on either side, this is a clever Valvetronic setup that properly barks through the revs.

It’s not a hooligan car, of course, it’s a refined cruiser that just happens to be hilariously fast, with a tastefully trimmed interior and a cosseting ride. And with just 18,600 miles on the clock and in lovely condition inside and out, this is a delectable summer roadster that feels as fresh as a daisy and is more than ready for your sunshiney adventures.

Summary

The specification of this car really speaks for itself. The Roadster’s 3.7-litre Ford V6 is an engine with a lot of heart, combining everyday refinement with extremely eager performance. The way the car handles is close to other-worldly, being at once highly engaging and impressively comfortable, with direct steering and a playful chassis. And the thing that really defines the experience with this particular car is that fabulous exhaust system, fitted recently at some considerable expense. It’s valved, so it’s fully able to behave sensibly around town and whisper its way about – but if you open the taps in angry mode (the remote-control valves bypassing the mufflers), it makes some very naughty noises. That’ll put a smile on your face every day.

The paint choice is inspired too, the Indigo Blue suiting the curves so well, the 15 inch Morgan alloy wheels make a great alternative to the (arguably) clichéd wire wheels.

A great spec, then, and a great car – this could be a fun toy for high days and holidays, or it could be your daily driver, it’d be equally happy doing either. Mechanically tip-top and ready to enjoy, your summertime adventures start here…
